Fellow college basketball fans, the time has come. Bring out your towels and your tears for this year's "March Madness" NCAA tournament. With national rankings changing every other week, it is difficult to determine who will walk home in a month with an NCAA National Championship trophy.
Yet, this year's tournament is very special because it is my first as a college student at Villanova.
So, maybe you have already noticed my bias, but I am rooting for my fellow Wildcats to take home another championship this year. As a student of a "basketball school," there are a variety of reasons that make our campus different from any other school.
First and foremost, the basketball team, including the coach, are celebrities on campus.
At Villanova, meeting Coach Jay Wright on campus is maybe as monumental as meeting Beyonce walking the streets of New York City. Also, our campus is covered in Jay Wright photos, autographs, and books that every student finds a way to appreciate.
Furthermore, seeing a player on campus causes even more excitement. Do you know how many times my friends sneakily gawk about seeing Phil Booth in the dining hall? Or what about the time when my friends caught Dante DiVincenzo buying Girl Scout cookies in the Quad? The stardom of the basketball team only adds to the vibrant school spirit we provide at every game, and especially March Madness.
Second, tickets to a basketball game are equivalent to Willy Wonka's golden tickets because everyone wants them.
In order to win tickets to Villanova Basketball games, you must enter a lottery. According to how many games you have previously attended, you are able to win a ticket in the Student's Section for any basketball game.
Villanova students know all too well that this lottery can become awfully competitive, especially whenever playing a good team or weekend games. Most notably, this year's best game was against Butler at the Wells Fargo Center mid-February.
And when I first did not win a ticket to the game via lottery, I was quick to flock to a Facebook group with all the members of my class to find a ticket. Finally, I did end up getting myself a Student Section ticket, and the game ended up being one of the best experiences I have had during my freshman year.
Third, you will always defend your team against the haters.
Yes, being the underdog of the 2016 NCAA tournament and the #1 team in the country for over a month this year has its disadvantages: all the haters who claim your team, players, and coach are no good and will not go far this year in the tournament. In these situations, all you do is put your "\\//" in the air and defend your Wildcats. A true Villanova fan would never put their team down because they love them too much.
Fourth, people always associate your school with its basketball team.
Last May, when I said I was going to Villanova University, the most common answer I received was, "Oh, that's the school with the good basketball, right?" It makes you happy knowing that your school is well-known on a national setting because of its successful athletics.
Fifth, March is going to be the most intense month ever on campus.
In the months leading up to March, I had at least one conversation per day about the basketball team. Going back to campus after Spring Break, I know I am diving headfirst into the whirlwind of emotions which is March Madness. I am ready for the endless watch parties, brackets, and intensity that is to come.
