With Hillary Clinton losing email, Donald Trump's locker room talk, and everything that has happened in between, it feels like this election is the worst thing that has ever happened to the country. However, even though this one has wracked the country, this isn't the craziest election we've had by a long shot.
1. The 1788 Election
The first election to ever happen in American history is actually one of the craziest. We all know George Washington won, but he actually unopposed. This was actually because the founding fathers didn't believe in political parties. This is the only time a president has ran unopposed, and since our entire election process is based on a party system, it's crazy that it started with an election that was the exact opposite of that.
2. The 1800 Election
John Adams and his opposed Thomas Jefferson in the 1800 election actually tied. This sent the vote to the House of Representatives. During the House vote, Jefferson and his vice presidential candidate tied. Except they didn't tie just once. They tied 35 times. Finally, after seven days of voting, Jefferson was elected president.
3. The 1872 Election
Ulysses S. Grant's opponent, Horace Greeley, died during the election, shortly before votes were cast. Still, Greeley managed to get three electoral college votes. He is the only person to have died while running for president.
4. The 1948 Election
Everyone knew going into this election that Harry Truman was going to lose. It was so widely accepted that the Chicago Daily Tribune printed newspapers with the headline "Dewey Defeats Truman" before the winner was announced. This was definitely iconic when Truman won.
5. The 2000 Election
George Bush and Al Gore ran against each other in one of the closest elections in history in 2000. It came down to the decision of Florida, which was hard to tell, because the punch ballot they used weren't all punched completely. The "hanging chad" problem caused there not to be a president elected for five weeks as the dispute was settled.
