5 Don'ts When Dealing With An Indian
Tanvi Chauhan

We value our house, family, money, garden, food, rituals, customs, traditions, domestic animals, festivals, dance, visitors, and anything that can come to your mind. Everything that there is, we cherish. You might ask why - well, I don't know. It seems as though something innately is so super-fixed into our DNA that every little thing is aspected in our lives in its proper and particular position. Though we are one of the sweetest breeds of humans, there are things you must refrain from when interacting with us.

So, you have an Indian friend or connection? Here are the 5 'do not's' when dealing with an Indian:

1. Don't tell us we have an accent.

We know we do - and we do so precisely because we can speak more than just English. Being a country of 29 states and 7 union territories, we probably know more than 3 native languages already. Our English is going to be distinct and the grammar sometimes incomprehensible, but we would rather hear this from another Indian, not a westerner. That's unfair, I know, but it's the truth.

2. Don't make that face when you see our food.

By that, I mean, when we are eating our orange, red, or green curries with flat breads, don't ask us what we are eating while simultaneously making a disgusted-slash-confused face. Especially this question: ***squints eyes, raises nose, flattens lips** "What is that?"

We are eating masala food that has lots of spices, and it's delicious! Very Delicious!

3. Don't ask us if our parents have already searched our mate.

Yes, it is still a practice for parents to look for ideal matches for their children, but we get to choose and date. "Arrange marriages" happen everywhere and all the time! For example, when some connection of yours tries to 'hook' you up with somebody they know, they are arranging a match.

4. Don't give us any supernatural talk

We hail from the land of Yoga, Meditation, and Mysticism - we may not practice any of this much at all now (hahaha), but we are still inventors of it! ;) We love chakras, gemstones, and superstitions, and we need no more knowledge on astral travel or divine pursuits.

5. Don't make remarks about India

The negatives are a definite no no, like, 'the population in India is so high,' or 'the animals travel on the sidewalk.' But sometimes, be careful with even the positive ones like 'you all are so good with math' or 'all Indians like computers.' You may find some that really struggle with math and some who have no idea on how to start a word doc, but categorizing them according to race will make them conscious, and probably self-doubting.

Though we will never upfront tell you how irritating some questions are, we all feel them provoking us. So if you happen to have an Indian person you know, memorize these five don'ts - trust me, you will be in our good books for as many lives as the cosmos intends :) See what I did there? Haha!

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
