From "Beauty and the Beast" and "The Jungle Book" to upcoming films like "Aladdin" and "The Lion King," one can safely say that Disney movie remakes are on the rise. However, these remakes come with a barrage of mixed opinions. Some are absolutely thrilled to see beloved classics redone and hitting the big screen once again. Other movie fans, however, see these remakes as completely unnecessary and a complete insult to the original film. No matter your opinion on these movies, they seem to be doing well in theaters and with that, we can expect to see more on the horizon.
Disney is choosing certain movies to be remade based on certain characteristics and qualities, but personally, I believe there are some more deserving of the "re-imagining" love more than others. In my opinion, there are some movies that could use a touch up while others should be left in their original state, at least for the moment.
1. Atlantis: The Lost Empire
Quite a few movies on this list are Disney underrated classics and "Atlantis: The Lost Empire" is definitely one of them. A movie focused on the story of the lost city of Atlantis, this film was not one of the more popular Disney films when it was released. Taking a step outside of the princess storyline Disney was built upon, this film was judged harshly for its unique approach and its interesting art style. However, that is precisely the reason I believe that this movie should be remade; at its core it is extremely imaginative with a cast of colorful characters and amazing scenery. This film could really benefit from a live-action remake; perhaps a new version would allow the film to expand its fanbase and anchor itself within the hall of Disney classic films. Personally, I think this one would be a good choice not only to bring a new level of creativity to the big screen, but also to bring new life to a seriously underrated and widely creative Disney film.
2. Treasure Planet
"Treasure Planet" and "Atlantis: The Lost Empire" suffer from the same problems; these movies took a step beyond the Disney foundation and were panned by critics and movie goers alike. However, I believe also that these two movies share similar strengths; both of these films are widely creative and fun to watch. The settings of these films are incredibly creative and "Treasure Planet," a space-centered retelling of "Treasure Island" brings a new twist to the story. The atmosphere of the movie with a great focus on steam-punk mixed with a space adventure can be considered odd at times, but one cannot deny that it is incredibly original and unique. The movie has its own feel and world and because of this, I believe it is incredibly underrated. A remake could really shine a new light on what is a touching story with creative settings and character designs. As a plus, these Disney remakes have proven they are not afraid to make some changes to the original story's plot. While that leaves me a bit skeptical at times, I do think that this could benefit "Treasure Planet" because one big criticism of the movie is its introduction of the loud and sometimes considered annoying character of the robot B.E.N. Overall, I think that with a remake, an already great movie could be even greater.
3. The Hunchback of Notre Dame
Okay, I know you must think I am completely crazy with putting this film on this list, but I think that this movie would be interesting as a remake. Now, I am not saying that this movie is bad by any stretch of the word or did extremely poorly when it was released. In fact, I am suggesting for this movie to get a remake mostly because of its positive attributes. Granted, I think this film could use a touch up with characters like "Treasure Planet" when it comes to the gargoyle characters, but this movie would just be very interesting to see portrayed on the big screen. When I think of this movie, the first words that come to mind are "big" and "grand." To me, this movie just screams large and imposing. The impressive way the church and the city of France are portrayed within this movie give me no doubt that this movie would be absolutely stunning to see on the silver screen. Besides, this film has one of the most iconic villains of all time in Judge Frollo and contains one of the loveliest soundtracks of any Disney film. It is a beautifully shot and put together film and I think it would be incredible to see the set design in a live action film.
4. The Sword in the Stone
Now this movie comes straight from my childhood vault. I grew up on "The Sword in the Stone" and remember vividly adoring this movie for its focus on magic and wizardry. Back then and to this day I love things with a flair for the magical or mystically creative and this movie is no exception. With its calming animation and magical story, this movie had me hooked. However, this movie is definitely overlooked in the entire Disney film lineup; often, many people forget that this movie even exists. Personally, I can see the reason and that is precisely why I think this movie could benefit from a remake: this movie had an odd sense of pacing and story telling. Taking us through the story of Merlin and King Arthur, this film, while conceptually sounds interesting, is presented in a disjointed manner with long focuses on certain scenes that drag the movie out. Often, the film feels scattered in nature which doesn't really endear itself to movie fans. However, I think with a remake, this film could really fix its pacing and story telling problems and come out even stronger than before.
5. Emperor's New Groove
Once again, this movie, in theory, should not be on this list. Other than being kind of overlooked when talking about classic Disney movies, the "Emperor's New Groove" is a Disney movie that is beloved by countless individuals. It's buddy travel film aesthetic and its ability to turn out one of the most iconic Disney villain duos of all time make it a classic in many eyes. Honestly, I am one who really adores this film and that is why I think it deserves to be remade. Personally, I would be interested to see how a live-action film portrays this film's amazing sense of humor. For me, this movie was full of laughs and interesting jokes; to see these humorous bits come to the big screen in live-action form would be really interesting. Besides, I would think that a live-action version of this film would have a lot of fun when it comes to its setting and character casting choices. I would love to see who they would decide to cast as Yzma. Overall, it is due to this film's strengths in comedy and character Disney that I would love to see a live-action remake hit the big screen.
Disney may be criticized for its live-action remake kick, but they know what fans are willing to pay money to go see on the big screen. Knowing this, I hope to see Disney take some risks and remake films that fit outside the box of the expected.
