It is estimated that the Average American spends on average 4.7 hours per day on their phones. And a staggering 3 hours of that time is dedicated to checking and posting on social media. I have always been aware of the extensive timeI spend on my phone, but it wasn't until recently when I began to think how committed of a relationship I have been having with my iPhone. Whether I am playing music or checking Instagram while waiting for the bus, or updating my Snapchat story my phone is never more than five feet from my body at all times of the day with the exception of showering.
I go on social media every couple hours and am always up to date on my news feeds. While in the middle of doing my homework I will take a quick break to check my phone. This 5-minute study break turns into an hour spend on my phone. I will start on Instagram and end up clicking onto a friends picture and then 30 minutes later I am on my friends roommates boyfriends sisters Instagram. My minutes become hours which then become half of my day spent on my phone.
While at dinner, I look around and see half of the table looking at their phone or obsessing about which filter to use or when prime hour to post is. And Im guilty of this on one too many occasions. I'm tired of judging and obsessing over likes and filters, views, and stories. I have accepted the challenge of deleting my Instagram , snapchat, and Facebook apps and going social media free for 5 days.
By doing this, I hope to gain time which I usually spend wasted on my phone and by the end of the day I hope to notice that my thumbs are nt soar from scrolling up and down on my phone. After these five days, I hope to inspire other people to put their phones away and try and escape the social media for a week.
