In today's age, there are millions of opportunities every day to reference TV shows that are relative to the situation at hand. I find myself doing this during lecture when my econ professor talks about bankruptcy, I am thinking about Michael Scott's iconic "I DECLARE BANKRUPTCY!!!" But how can you make these associations if you have never seen some of the best comedies to date?
I guess technically I am right outside of the age group of millennials, missing it by a year, but everyone includes my age group in it, so we are just going to go with it. To truly function and thrive in our millennial society you need to be able to call on these five comedies to make it through the day: (it's not actually that serious but it kind of is)
1. 'New Girl'
The iconic story about a girl, Jess, moving into an apartment with three guys. Crazy things were bound to happen. If you haven't seen it already you have until April 10 to get caught up and prepared for the final season. So uhh get on it. To give you a taste of what you may be missing out on, here are some of the funniest quotes you have missed out on:
"Schmidt Happens."
"If I were off my rocker, would I take a weekly selfie with my cat?"
"I found garbage and it has chocolate on it!"
2. 'Parks and Recreation'
Sweet, Leslie Knope just wanted to build a park, but she got so much more than that throughout this hilarious spin on local government. With characters that just about everyone can resonate with, this is a must watch for everyone.
"Sometimes you gotta work a little so you can ball a lot."
"Treat yo' self."
"Zerts are what I call desserts. Tray-trays are entrées. I call sandwiches ‘sammies,' ‘sandoozles,' or ‘Adam Sandlers.' Air conditioners are ‘cool blasterz.' I call cakes ‘big ol' cookies.' I call noodles ‘long-ass rice.' Fried chicken is ‘fry-fry chicky-chick.' Chicken parm is ‘chicky-chicky-parm-parm.' Chicken cacciatore? ‘Chicky-cach.' I call eggs ‘pre-birds,' or ‘future birds.' Root beer is ‘super water.' Tortillas are ‘bean blankets.' And I call forks ‘food rakes."
3. 'The Office'
This mockumentary on what seems to be typical office employees in a simple paper company turns into so much more in this classic comedy. Maybe working in an office isn't as boring as people think it is, especially if you have a boss like Michael Scott.
"I'm not superstitious, but I am a little-stitious."
"I want people to be afraid of how much they love me."
"Bears. Beets. Battlestar Galactica."
4. 'How I Met Your Mother'
Ted Mosby tells the story of how he met the mother of his children, and while on this crazy, excessively detailed journey a group of friends in New York become so much more. You'll laugh, you'll cry, and you'll fall in love with this rowdy bunch.
"Whenever I'm sad I stop being sad and start being awesome instead."
"I request the highest of fives."
"Nothing good happens after 2 AM."
5. 'Friends'
The ultimate classic. A group of friends trying to figure out life in New York (but much different than HIMYM). New jobs, new relationships, new apartments, and most importantly lots of laughter drive this comedy and make it a true gem.
"PIVOT! PIVOT! PIVOT!"
"Your love is like a giant pigeon crapping on my heart."
"You can't just give up! Is that what a dinosaur would do?"
