5 Career Fair Pressure Points

As college students, it's in our genes to deny the fact that we will become independent adults after our four years at Miami. Parties and exams will become a thing of the past, replaced with real world jobs and very real bills that need to be paid.Ā Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā

The thought of finding our first job after graduation is both exciting and terrifying, and generally a topic we prefer to avoid. But it isnā€™t so easy to deny that reality when campus is teeming with students in suits and resumes in hand. Ā  Ā  Ā  Ā Ā

Suddenly your inbox is flooded with emails from Career Services. You canā€™t remember the difference between business casual and business professional. AndĀ youā€™re reaching for the closest paper bag to hyperventilate into. Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā

Welcome to Career Fair. Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā

For those who received an internship or job offer: youā€™re the lucky ones. For the rest of us, hereā€™s why Career Fair has our stomachs in knots.

1. Ā  Ā Resumes: Not only do resumes have to be filled with extracurriculars, a strong GPA, and leadership experience, but all of these also have to fit on a single page. It is hard enough choosing what template to use, let alone deciding which information stays and which gets the boot. You have one page to market yourself and impress recruiters. No pressure.

2.Ā Ā Ā Ā  Lines: If you are nervous about talkingĀ to recruiters, donā€™t worry. You will have plenty of time to replay worst-case scenarios in your head while you wait behind the twenty other people in front of you. Two hours later and you may have only talked to three out of the six companies you are interested in, but at least you became friends with the people waiting next to you. Ā Ā

3. Ā  Ā  TheĀ Crowd: Itā€™s a beautiful afternoon in September and youā€™re dressed head to toe in a black suit. If youā€™re not sweating by the time you reach the fair, you will be once you maneuver through the hundreds of other suit-clad students. At least this way you can blame your sweating on the heat instead of your nerves.

4.Ā Ā Ā Ā  Layout: The booths, the lines, the sheer amount of people. It is hard not to feel overwhelmed. Even if you look in the booklet it can be difficult to find exactly where each booth is located. After a few laps around Millet, youā€™ll find what you are looking for. Hopefully.Ā

5.Ā Ā Ā Ā  Pressure: No matter if you are a seniorĀ graduating in the spring or a first-semester freshman, there is always some pressure of getting a job interview or landing the perfect internship. You may not be what they are looking for, which is never a good feeling. Especially when it can feel as if your future depends on it. Nevertheless, life does go on after Career Fair, even if you didnā€™t snag that interview. You can go back to forgetting about the real world for the time beingā€”until Spring Ice anyway.

Sorority
Rebekah Lee

I remember my freshman year oh so well. I remember feeling terrified the night before orientation. The one thing that I dreaded the most was not the new people, the new environment, or even the academic pressure. I was dreading having to talk to sorority girls about Recruitment. I remember cutting off and avoiding any Rho Gamma/Panhellenic Officer that came my way during First Week. I looked at them like they had asked me to cut my arm off whenever they asked me if I wanted to rush. To be honest, I did not even know what rush was, but I knew that I did NOT want to be a part of it. To me, it was dumb. It was a waste of money. It was a waste of my time.

And guess what? I did not rush my freshman year. I spent the first half of my freshman year isolating myself from everyone on campus. I spent all of my time in the library, and then (since I was a commuter) went back home once my work was finished.

Tiana would no doubt be disappointed in the food our cafeteria has to offer.

And hopefully she would cook for everyone in her dorm.

She definitley would not take any 8:00 am classes because she would be up late baking and cleaning up the communal kitchen that are available in every dorm.
