Ah, the holidays. The most violent time of the year.
Oh, you thought I was going to say wonderful? Well, it may be wonderful for punctual people who got their holiday shopping done about a month ago, but for people (like me) who haven’t done any shopping, it’s about to get pretty physical.
I say this because malls are a place where procrastinators wreak havoc on poor retail workers. I speak from experience when I say tensions are high and stress levels are higher.
I once was helping a customer, and she had a pile of clothing to try on next to her, and these women came up and started looking at her pile. My customer politely told them those were hers and to not mess with them. These women did not care whatsoever and said something along the lines of “I do what I want, you didn’t buy these yet.”
I’ve never seen a woman get so angry and snatch clothes from someone so quickly and start yelling in the middle of the store. And what was I supposed to do when “the customer is always right” and they were both customers? AWKWARD.
Anyhoo, even though stress levels are high, be kind to retail workers and other shoppers because this is the season of giving after all! Hence why I’m here to steer you in the right direction of finding the perfect last-minute gift to give without having it look like a last-minute gift.
1. Socks
Socks? Are you kidding? Isn’t that known as the worst present to give? Not anymore! Socks are very in right now, according to multiple looks that went down the runway during fashion week. Shimmery, sheer socks surpass the ugly white patchy socks this year, and you can get some at Urban Outfitters or ASOS.
If you’re struggling with time or don’t have a location near you, you can order online in the comfort of your PJs. Another sock trend this season are fishnet socks which give you that edgy look without having the struggle of pulling them up all the way to your waist.
2. Underwear
Again, are you kidding? I most certainly am not. I may be biased because I work at Victoria’s Secret, but call me weird when I say I love receiving some nice chonies. And if you haven’t ever heard of the word chonies, it’s basically Mexican slang for underwear—you learn something new every day!
But going back to the main point, if you’re looking for a cute gift to get your girlfriends, there’s great 3 for $35 deals on fancy underwear at Victoria’s Secret, but if you’re popular and have lots of friends there’s always the 5 for $28 deal on great style selections and colors
3. Mugs
If you love coffee like I do, you know that a cute mug makes drinking coffee more fun and makes it taste better!
An old trend that is starting to resurface in the coffee mug world is heat-sensitive mugs. If you haven’t heard of these, you need to look them up. They use super cool thermo-technology, that I don’t understand, to change colors, and some of them even have pictures or sayings that appear. If your gift recipient is a Potter Head, look no further for a magical gift, they have plenty! Find some now at the Harry Potter Shop on Amazon.
If you’re looking to customize it and put your own DIY touch to your mug, there’s also the baking technique. You can get a plain white mug from the Dollar Store or any vendor and get some alcohol-based markers and draw right on the mug. After you’re done decorating, bake in the oven at 350 degrees for 30 minutes and let them cool inside the oven. It’s important that you use alcohol-based markers/paint so it sets on the mug and makes them dishwasher-safe.
4. Bath bombs
Life is hard. Which means I’m stressed 90% of the time, and I’m guessing you and the person you’re shopping for is too. That’s why bath bombs are great. Honestly, anything from LUSH is sure to destress you. To make your life even less stressful, they have packages already wrapped and ready to go with all the products you’ll ever want and need for a night of de-stressing after finals. These packages range from $30 with six bath-oriented items to $80 with 9 bath bombs and two bath oils. This is also a great gift for any vegan friends or anti-animal cruelty advocates because LUSH does not test any of their products on animals.
5. Tie blankets
Anything hand-made is probably going to hit the heartstrings. Get out your creative side and make a tie blanket! You can go to any fabric store like JoAnn’s or Michael’s and get fabric and make one of your very own. The usual measurement is about 2.5 yards, which can run anywhere from $35-$70 depending on the type of fabric. Before you go, you can also look online for coupons—they always have an abundance of deals!
Once you get your two pieces of fabric, you lay one on top of the other and cut out 3x3 squares on each corner. After that, you simply cut tassels, tie them together, and voilà—a great blanket your loved one can cuddle up in. You can also personalize this by getting iron-on patches or letters. When I made one for my sister, I ordered her sorority’s Greek letters from Amazon and she absolutely loved it!
Happy holidays, I hope your loved ones love their gifts! Oh, and don’t get run over by Santa’s sleigh or violent shoppers!
