Every summer I always promise myself that I'm going to read every day for however many minutes or pages, but oddly enough, I never get around to it (I could say the same about my New Year's resolutions). This year though, I'm determined. So determined, in fact, that I've made a list in advance. Here are five of my summer book picks.
1. "Hyperion" by Dan Simmons
I was watching a YouTube video about book recommendations from Hank Green, and apparently, this book changed the way he viewed the world. Whether that's a good or bad thing is yet to be determined.
2. "Thus Spoke Zarathustra" by Friedrich Nietzsche
I've been wanting to get more into philosophy, and who better to start with than Nietzsche? I read the blurb on the back and it sounds really interesting.
3. "The Catcher in the Rye" by J.D. Salinger
I've already started this book, and so far I love it. Holden Caulfield has an accessible, yet kind of indescribable personality. I know this is cliche, but I genuinely feel like he and I would be friends.
4. "Death Comes for the Archbishop" by Willa Cather
Once again, another book I've already started. So far it's not too dry, but it is very slow, so hopefully I can finish it this summer.
5. "The Restaurant at the End of the Universe" by Douglas Adams
I finished "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" a couple months ago, and I was floored when I put the book down. Douglas Adams is a huge inspiration because I honestly love his writing style. It's eccentric, witty and hilarious, and I hope to model my own writing in a similar way.
