This semester, I chose to study abroad in the beautiful Florence, Italy. As my time abroad comes to a close, I've decided to compile a list of everything I've learned while galavanting across Europe. Without further ado, here are 40 things I learned while studying abroad.
1. Never say no to an opportunity.
2. Being afraid is a good thing. It pushes you to leave your comfort zone.
3. Follow your heart. It will lead you to beautiful experiences.
4. Choose what makes you happy.
5. Foreign public transportation systems are easier to navigate than you might think.
6. Eat all the food. Order five plates. Calories don't count while abroad.
7. Doing things alone is freeing. It's not weird or sad. You should enjoy your own company.
8. Risks are a good thing.
9. Not everyone will support you. Do what you want anyway.
10. Love can find you in mysterious places...like Oktoberfest.
11. Never take anything for granted.
12. You are blessed to be able to travel the world.
13. The world is smaller than you think. So small, that you might stumble upon an old friend in the middle of Florence.
14. People all over the world are extremely similar.
15. Feeling uncomfortable is a good thing.
16. You will know more about yourself by the end than you thought possible.
17. Immersing yourself in the culture by speaking the language and volunteering is not only polite, but the best way to take advantage of the country you're living in.
18. Languages may differ, but we are all human. There is always a way around a language barrier and it starts with non-verbal communication.
19. Making new friends from other places and countries is an incredible way to learn more about the world. It's also easier than you think.
20. In general, everyone in Europe is super friendly.
21. There are way more important things in life than schoolwork.
22. Sleep isn't important when abroad.
23. Make your own happiness. Don't depend on others to do so.
24. Independence and self-reliance are keys to living.
25. Put the phone down and simply appreciate the moment. You won't get these experiences back.
26. Don't worry about the money. You worked your ass off to come here--simply enjoy.
27. Always remain young at heart.
28. You can't travel if you aren't adaptable.
29. Homesickness will hit and it will make you appreciate your family and friends even more.
30. When you want something to happen, you've got to make it happen for yourself.
31. Traveling to other countries is amazing, but don't forget to explore your true study abroad country.
32. You will make mistakes. And that's OK. Nobody's perfect, and if they think they are, they need a reality check.
33. Wandering and getting lost is a good thing. It gives you a different perspective of the land that you didn't have before.
34. You can't be a primadonna while traveling. You will stay in cheap hostels and fly cheap airlines. Or take a bus for 13 hours.
35. Yes, you are American. No, there aren't American things here. Assimilate or suffer basically.
36. Eat food you never thought you'd try or like. Chances are, they're probably delicious.
37. Sometimes it's better to not know what you're eating and to simply enjoy it.
38. Sweatpants don't exist in Europe. Dress nicely.
39. The semester will fly by. Every minute of every day counts, so make the most of it.
40. Studying abroad was the best decision I could have ever made.
Ciao for now, Europe. Thank you for everything, and I will certainly be back to visit.
