There's something about reading that's full of magic. In grade school, I was always confused as to why everybody else hated to read, or why my classmates despised silent reading time, or why I was considered "weird" for pulling out a book whenever I had a spare moment. As I grew older, I was thrilled to learn that there were other people who loved reading as much as me, and I began to notice that there were a few weird things that we all had in common.
1. You have a love for the smell of books.
I have been caught sniffing a book before. It wasn't embarrassing, just awkward, but it's hard to explain why I was sniffing a book when the other person has never experienced that otherworldly smell. According to an article on the Barnes and Noble website, when the chemicals within the paper, glue, and ink start to degrade, they give off a smell that is similar to vanilla. This is also why older books smell better than newer books because they've had more time to degrade.
2. You know the book was way better than the movie.
I've annoyed plenty of people by going to the movies with them, and then saying afterward, "I thought the book was better than the movie." I'm not trying to be rude, or act as if I am better than people who haven't read the book; I'm simply making an observation. Books offer much more than movies can because there is no limit to what can be said or shown. There are more details within the pages of a book, you have access to the main character's thoughts, and the little scenes that really make the book aren't removed due to how much or little they pertain to the main storyline.
3. You bring books with you just in case.
I've been known to pull a random book or two out of my bag once I get bored at events. I never know when I'll actually need one, so I just always have a book on me. It's just in case, but I know that the one time I forget to grab a book before I leave is the time I'll need one the most. I promise I'm not trying to be anti-social; I'm just really into the story.
4. There's no stopping you once you've started a book.
"One more chapter" is a book lover's "one more episode." I've spent many nights reading by the dimmed light of my lamp because I just needed to know how the book ended. One more chapter turns into five more chapters turns into ten chapters, and that's not even where the excuses end. I've told myself, "Oh, I only have 100 pages left until I finish the book, so I'll just keep reading." It's a never-ending cycle as I move from one book to another.
