As the end of my college career approaches disturbingly fast, I can't help but look back over my years here and how they have changed me for the better. My experience at The College of Charleston has been both greatly challenging and rewarding.
The city of Charleston has become a home to me and I am taking away much more than just an education. I want to do what I can, while I can to give back to my school and to the city that I've fallen in love with. There isn't a shortage of ways to give back and get involved in your city—all you have to do is be willing to lend your time and efforts.
In my search to make an impact on the city that has made such an impact on me, I came across a handful of opportunities that especially stood out to me and hopefully they will to you too. In the words of the queen of philanthropy, Oprah Winfrey, "To move forward, you have to give back."
1. Charleston Waterkeeper
This organization is dedicated to the protection and restoration of Charleston's waterways. Their work ensures that the people of Charleston have, "drinkable, fishable and swimmable water" through campaigns, programs, and cleanups.
This organization especially stood out to me and is first on this list because I am currently taking a class centered around the vital importance of water in our lives and how it is increasingly becoming more and more invisible and overlooked.
Water is connected in some way to everything we do and we take it for granted. It is crucial that we take care of our waterways and this is a great way to do your part. Get involved in Charleston Waterkeeper or your local water protection group.
2. One80 Place
If you are looking for an organization that directly affects the city, it doesn't get more community-oriented than One80 Place. As someone who lives on King, I am painfully aware of the immense number of homeless in the city. One80 Place works passionately to prevent homelessness by providing food, shelter, and opportunity.
They help people to get back on their feet and become an intricate part of Charleston's community. One80 place creates an environment that not only helps the homeless but in turn supports Charleston's economy. Their core belief is that "everyone has a home."
Charleston is my home and I can't think of a better way to give back than to help make it a true home to others as well.
3. Alternative Break
Last but certainly not least is Alternative Break. Contrary to the name, it is not an alternative rock music festival but actually a transformative and experiential learning opportunity.
Students get the chance to spend their spring breaks addressing critical issues such as affordable housing, LGBTQIA+ Rights, environmental protection, civil rights and sustainability in not only Charleston but communities around the country.
This is an amazing opportunity for anyone who is interested in making a difference in the world by learning and taking part in valuable and meaningful service work. You've been to Cancun and Palm Beach before, you'll go again. Spend this year's break doing something that will make a difference and build up your resume.
These three organizations are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to opportunities available to volunteer and get involved. I plan on spending my last year as a student doing what I can to give back to the city that has given so much to me. If you are not a Charleston resident, look into ways you can help within your own community. Happy volunteering!
