School started on August 16th. I had two new professors and both of them were lovely. While they were nice, I have had teachers that need to learn a thing or two about students and student life. Some teachers have been out of the young hip lifestyle for a while and forgot what it was like to be a student. They have forgotten so I have made them a list as to help them.
1. I don't want to do anything on the first day.
On the first day of classes, I have never just gotten the syllabus and been able to leave. I know these are upper-level courses and there is a lot to learn, but I don't want to do anything on the first day. I have had to move in, go to a job interview, figure out where my classes were, and transport myself to campus so I do not want to have to learn about the history of middle England. Please give us students a break.
2. Give me a chance to get my books.
Many teachers on the first week expect students to have all of their books on the first day or two and want them to have read chapters 1-4 by the next class. These books are hundreds of dollars sometimes and some people have a hard time scrounging up the money to get them; plus with the bookstore being packed, it can be extremely difficult to get the 7 books I need. Just give me and other students time to get the materials.
3. Don't go over the class time.
We as students are very busy. We have work, pets, friends, family, and homework to handle so please do not go over the assigned class time. I have been late for the bus to take me home and other classes because of teachers going over. I know it happens sometimes and that's ok, but don't get mad at students because they walk out of class before you're done.
4. You think I'm dumb, but I'm not.
Sometimes people forget that everyone is different and that we all have strengths and weaknesses. If I make a bad grade on a test, don't assume that it is because I am dumb. I made a 40% on a test one time in trigonometry but made an A in the class. One or two bad grades doesn't make a bad student. Just help me with my weaknesses and I'll make up for it with my strengths.
