On January 30th 2018, President Donald Trump delivered a fiery State of the Union Address that explained his view on the current trajectory of the United States. He unsurprisingly described at great length the accomplishments of his first year and outlined some policies he'd like to see in the future. Here are 4 major takeaways from the address.
1. America First
Trump continued to hold tight to his campaign ideals with his America first rhetoric. His address was almost entirely about domestic policy. He focused heavily on the economy and immigration and mentioned America's role in the world at large very sparingly. His address made it clear that "America First" isn't just an ideal, but the absolute reality of the Trump administration.
2. Economic Growth
Despite the heavy controversy surrounding Trump's presidency, in his first year the stock market has shown massive improvement and close to two million jobs have been created. However, it's important to note that this growth is a continuing of the trends brought on by the Obama administration. Obama inherited one of the largest economic crisises America had seen since the Great Depression, and he was able to instrument a massive economic recovery. It is important to distinguish between the economic state of the union entering the Obama presidency vs. entering Trump's.
3. Bipartisanship
Trump took time in his address to discuss the importance of a united government. However, even after his address polls report that significantly less than half of democrats are willing to get behind Trump. Trump's views on immigration and history of intensely controversial and offensive statements have made in unlikely that the breach separating Democrats and Republicans can be recovered.
4. DREAM
Congress is rapidly approaching another deadline that could result in another government shut down. Democrats and Republicans just cannot seem to get on the same page when it comes to the Dream Act. Trump said that "American's are dreamer's too" suggesting once again that DREAMers are in some sense negatively impacting the opportunities of American's at large.
