If you haven't already seen "Me Before You," can I just tell you it's Fricken amazing! It's a must-see for sure.
Here's why.
1. The Author Jojo Moyes wrote the screenplay.
Now if you are anything like me, you like a movie based on a book to be just like the book. I hate when TV or movies claim to be “based” on a book but all that they have kept the same are the character’s names. Fortunately, that’s not the case here.
Since the author was actually a part of the screenplay, the movie was pretty true to the book. In fact, some scenes were “word for word” dialogue from the book. I love that they did this with this movie because there were some lines in the book that just resonated in my mind for hours after putting it down.
2. It’s the good kind of “tear-jerker.”
You know how sometimes you just need a good cry? A cry that serves as a release of all the tension in your body, and somehow clears your mind. This movie will do that for you. I walked into that movie theater feeling tight from stressing over work, and relationships. But I left the movie theater only thinking of one thing, life.
I think everyone who has seen this movie expected to cry, hell I even prepared myself and brought tissues to the theater. I noticed, however, that when I was crying I wasn’t crying because I was sad, I was crying because the movie had illustrated what some would call the meaning of life and even death. I left feeling refreshed and curious about my life and what I want to do with it. I felt a weird sense of power; power to decide what I want to do before it’s too late.
3. The love story comes out of nowhere.
Well this isn’t the case so much in the movie, but everything is faster in movies. In the book, however, the romantic love story was not obvious until the near end of the book. In fact, while I was reading the book I had no idea it was going to be romantic until I saw a preview for the movie on the TV. I thought to myself “Of course it’s a love story” but it really wasn’t obvious. It definitely wasn’t a “love at first sight” story.
The author did an excellent job portraying these characters, Will; handsome and stubborn, And Louisa; quirky, and caring. So much so that towards the middle of the book readers are so focused on Louisa’s passion to “save” Will that the romance was just an added bonus. It isn’t really until the latter end of the book that you realize Louisa’s efforts were partly selfish, and that she had fallen in love with Will.
4. Yolo
It’s true, you really do only have one life to live. I think the real love story here was not between two people, but instead between an inexperienced girl and the power to live her life. Louisa played it safe, she never ventured far from home or told others how she really felt. But Will was a living breathing reminder that anything could happen, and all she had been doing before meeting him was wasting time.
If you learned anything from reading this book or seeing this movie, I hope that it is to stop obsessing over the little thing, hell stop obsessing over everything. Stop wondering if the guy from tinder is going to see you again, or if you are working hard enough for that promotion. It could always be worse, so live your life while you can. Go skydiving, book a flight to a random destination, or learn how to cook an exotic meal. In the end, it won’t matter if he called you back or if you got that promotion, as long as you experience all that you can out of life.
