People love to complain about whatever political beliefs aren't their own. If they've been a Republican over the past few years, "Thanks Obama!" has been something they've yelled sarcastically in the past. When Trump does something the left disagrees with, "Not My President" they say. I'm writing this article for two reasons. One is because this is the first topic to cross my mind on a day when my weekly piece is due. Two is that if you are going to complain, you need to vote, not just in an election year when it's cool and hip to talk about voting, but also during these times when everyone talks politics but actually voting in elections are the last thing on anyone's mind. My full-time residence is in Tennessee but because I am a college student in the State of Florida, I am in the process of switching my voter registration state to Florida.
1. Voting is an essential part do Democracy. Duh
I know you hear it all the time and it's more cliche than yolo in 2012, but this country will not be represented by the right people if everyone doesn't show up.
2. But don't just vote, register to vote in your adapted home state.
Something I'm in the process of right now. At a minimum, it should instill a source of pride in you and make you feel like the local you've always wanted to be.
3. Learn about the local community and how to make it better.
The City of Coral Gables is a pristine place in South Florida, and the best way to keep it in good shape is by making sure city officials have the same goals in mind. This isn't possible unless you register to vote with your school address.
4. For the super mega important Presidential Elections, Florida is a huge battleground state that has decided the winner every election in the 21st century.
That's right. You should register to vote in Florida because quite literally, your vote counts more here than it does in Tennessee for me or states like New York or New Jersey for many of you guys. This is the case regardless of your political beliefs, so don't put it off, register in Florida today!
