Back in my late middle school/early high school years, Myspace was the social network to be on. Now, we have an assortment of networks like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Tumblr, etc. but we just up and left Myspace. We did Myspace, and Tom, wrong and we need to take a little trip down memory lane.
- Profile Layouts
We were geniuses back then. A lot of us were able to create and edit HTML codes to make a layout we want or change the color of a font. I used to change all my letters to red, seeing as that was my favorite color and my layout always had something to do with Usher or Taylor Lautner. Now, I can’t even remember what an HTML code looks like. If you were one who didn’t bother with customizing backgrounds, there were like a million websites where you could just copy the code onto your page and get a nice layout.
2. Choosing Your Top Friends
Remember the top 5? Or 8? Only the best of the best, the crème de la crème, the BFF’s in your crew earned these spots. These were the friends whom you deemed worthy enough to appear on your page with their profile pictures and links to their profile. I’m sure this caused a lot of relationship problems. “If we’re dating, why am I not in your top? Why am I not your top 1?” I recall one time I stopped talking to my older cousin for a week because he was on my top…. BUT I WASN’T ON HIS?! Eventually, people learned how to disable that feature so many people didn’t even have a “top”.
3. The Notifications
There was nothing better than coming home from school and seeing these notifications on your home page. Of course we knew the picture comments were of your friends saying “I own this” or “own”. What was that? For real, it was cool back then but now it just sounds weird. Anyway, this was my favorite part of Myspace because it just felt like I kept getting cooler and cooler. *sunglasses emoji*
4. Online Now! And Last Login
Let’s just start by admitting the “last login” feature was kind of creepy, why do you need to know the exact date I was last online. Also didn’t help for when you were sneaking on the computer while you were supposed to on punishment but your mom finds your page and sees that you were on yesterday… but that’s another story for another day. I enjoyed the “online now” feature honestly because I liked to keep track of whoever my crush was at the time. I knew exactly when to message them and I could also tell if people were ignoring me.
Maybe one day we can go back to the 2008 Myspace and it’s about us and social networking and not music or whatever it is now. Comment below and tell us what your favorite part about Myspace was.
