To me, December is more than just Christmas and New Years Eve. My birthday falls right in between these two very festive, very celebrated holidays. When I tell people my birthday, they automatically ask the same questions. I figured I might as well clear thing up once and for all about holiday birthday protocol for all those who aren't lucky enough to have a birthday during the most wonderful time of year. I have included the few popular questions and answered them to my best ability. After all, I've had 19 holiday birthdays.
1. "How do you feel about having your birthday during the holidays?"
This is a really confusing question because my birthday feels like everyone else's. That's like asking a February birthday what it's like to have a birthday around Valentine's Day. It's a birthday, it's always exciting! Holiday birthdays are just a little more festive.
2. "Do you get presents for Christmas AND your birthday?"
Well...do you? It may seem like a lot since Christmas was so recent, but all the holiday sales are still happening so it's quite convenient. In most cases, people with holiday birthdays appreciate as much as a card or a phone call since our birthdays are so easy to overlook. We can't blame you though, so much is going on!
3. "Do people forget your birthday a lot?"
It's no secret that December and January birthdays are during one of the busiest times of the year. Everyone is travelling, families are hosting tons of parties, and friends are working to earn some extra cash for second semester. It can be easy to lose track of the days (or simply forget) with so much going on. Good thing Facebook is there to remind you -- so no more excuses.
4. "How do you celebrate your birthday?"
I celebrate my birthday just as anyone else would -- by treating myself and having some cake! It's true that sometimes parties are hard to throw. Growing up, a lot of my friends would be out of town on vacation or visiting family when I wanted to have a party, since it is such a busy time of year. As a young girl it made me a little upset and frustrated, but as I have gotten older I don't mind it at all! I find a friend or two to do something fun with and spend the rest of my day with my family.
Hopefully, this short Q & A has cleared up a few questions many have about holiday birthdays. If you know someone with a holiday birthday, make sure to mark it down on your calendar twice so you don't forget to wish them a "Happy Birthday!" before heading off to a holiday party.
