While there were some huge releases from artists like Drake, Future, and Kendrick Lamar, 2016 is turning out to be kind of a disappointment for hip-hop fans everywhere. Here are four of the best things that the hip-hop world released.
1. The Life of Pablo - Kanye West
I don't know about you, but I feel like Pablo. Regardless of how you feel about "Mr. West, Mr. West" hip-hop fans can't deny the stroke of genius that was this album. After years of subpar tracks, Kid Cudi teams up with Yeezy to remind us all why we loved Mr. Rager in "Father Stretch My Hands Pt. 1" and it's probably the feel-good song of 2016.
And don't even get me started on "Real Friends."
2. The Sun's Tirade - Isaiah Rashad
I've been a devoted Isaiah fan from the moment I heard "West Savannah" and this album just further solidified him a lifetime spot in my Spotify playlist.
Rashad teams up with fellow TDE members, SZA, Jay Rock, and Kendrick Lamar to truly find himself as a hip-hop artist, and it is as great as we've all been hoping for.
Painfully anxious and full of self-loathing, Rashad humanizes himself and his substance abuse problems in must-list to tracks like "AA" and "Wat's Wrong."
3. The Divine Feminine- Mac Miller
And boy, was it divine. Based on “the feminine energy of the planet.” And guess what? My feminine energy so feels that.
Will collaborations like Kendrick Lamar, Anderson .Paak, Ty Dolla $ign, and Celo Green, this album was destined to be the grooviest thing you've ever heard.
If you only listen to one hip-hop song this year, check out "Dang!" You'll thank me later.
4. Untitled, Unmastered- Kendrick Lamar
You know an artist is talented when they take an untitled, unmastered album, release it in secret, and still make it #1 on the Billboard Top 100.
Hip-Hop fans everywhere have been promised that Kendrick is the future of the genre. And with unmastered tracks like these, it's easy to see why.
Powerful and poignant, Lamar makes a statement with this nameless project that is neither an album or EP.
