North Korea. White Supremacy. Donald Trump.
Despite your opinion on any of these issues, I'm sure you've realized how absolutely insufferable modern-day discussion has become lately. The concept of civil debate has been tossed out the window and replaced with whatever is happening on my Twitter feed literally every single time I log on.
I'm sick of hearing about a Robert E. Lee statue that nobody on the planet cared about two weeks ago. Ibdetes. And it leaves me uncharacteristically stunned that there are people out there so blind to how the world works, they sincerely believe our president will cause "nuclear war."
There is so much wrong with the world right now and it seems the most venomous is loudly, uninvitingly, and defiantly ruining how we communicate and how we perceive our world around us. To ignore all of the vile negativity would, admittedly, be a level of ignorance bordering on destructive, but because there is so much hate in the world, sometimes we need to distance ourselves and search for the light in an apparently bleak world.
It isn't difficult to search for this light, however, as beings around the world continuously fight to preserve the light the evils of ignorance, greed, and lust condemn. This list is dedicated to that struggle and the heroes that face that struggle head-on.
1. 94 Year Old Man Installs A Neighborhood Pool After A Personal Tragedy
Keith and Evy Davison share the kind of love we hope to one day find. Happily married for 65 years, Keith and Evy projected an authentic joy even the most cynical would surrender to. Standing right by each other's side through thick and thin, power couple Kevy knew no force could ever separate their longing for each other. Not even the terminal cancer Evy was diagnosed with in 2012.
With the threat of death looming, Keith and Evy vowed to live out their final years together with the passion they've always had for each other now stronger than ever. Late night drives gave them the freedom they had felt in their youth, while watching the sunrise together became a newfound daily privilege the couple treated as tradition.
It was then in April 2016, four days before Keith and Evy's 66th anniversary, Evy took her final breath with Keith holding her in his arms one final time. With Evy gone, Keith went into a quiet seclusion to mourn the loss of his beloved, as well as the metaphorical loss of his own life. Family and friends reported the once kind, loving, and very vocal Keith had become a quiet shut-in, devastated over his Evy's departure. Keith's life had been changed forever and he was none too pleased about it.
A few weeks later, a neighbor by the name of Jessica Huebner spotted Keith marking the land in his backyard. Knowing his anguish over his Evy, Jessica approached Keith with caution, asking him his plans for the yard. With its first public appearances since Evy's death, Keith gave one of his famous smiles and declared he was going to install a neighborhood pool for children and families to enjoy.
Fast forward to late July of this year, Keith's pool is open and has been a smash hit for the neighborhood. The children and parents regularly use the pool while Keith sits by in the shade, enjoying the perpetual happiness his pool brings.
"It's him spreading joy throughout our neighborhood for these kids. (He) kind of adopted our whole neighborhood of kids, these are (his) grandkids." Huebner recalls.
With the pool in full operation, Keith has returned to his rightful place as a bringer of happiness while the children and families have returned Keith's soul back to him. His backyard now serves as a place for smiles and memories and Keith is happier than ever.
Keith Davison became an important role in his community just as his community became an important role in him. Of course, Keith hasn't moved on from Evy, but rather than succumbing to a lifeless existence, his tenacity transformed his grief into hope and became a savior for his neighborhood.
2. Formerly Abused Husky Now Helps Children Who Have Been Abused
In 2012, a homeless four-month-old puppy, freezing, starving, terrified, and alone. With bleeding, puss-covered scarring on his muzzle and no evidence of any owners, the puppy was rushed to an animal hospital, hoping he still had a bit of fight left in him. After numerous facial reconstruction surgeries and a couple doses of heavy-duty antibiotics, the dog was able to be saved just in the nick of time.
It was discovered during the dog's recovery that the scarring was caused by sharp barbed wire being tightly wrapped around the dog's muzzle to keep it permanently shut. With this new knowledge of the pup's tortured youth, Kevin Marlin adopted him and proceeded to build up his dog from the blood-soaked dirt he once knew, starting with his new name Patriot.
When Kevin brought Patriot to his new home, the dog was expectedly nervous and untrusting. A bowl of food was met with skepticism while sleeping in a bed meant Patriot to be at his most vulnerable for more torture. Living the life of a normal pet was a hard role to ease into for Patriot that might have been prolonged if it wasn't for Kevin's tenacity.
Kevin taught Patriot how to trust again with months of allowing Patriot to lick peanut butter off his fingers and the occasional stroke of his muzzle. After about a year of this treatment, Patriot began to feel comfortable enough to wear a collar, becoming the perfect pet any owner could ever ask for.
When the Orange County District Attorney’s Office decided to use therapy dogs for abused children in March 2016, Marlin knew that Patriot would be the perfect match. He worked with the legal office to start the PANDA Program--Paws Assist the Needs of the District Attorney. With abused children finding comfort in relating to Patriot's past, the program became an immediate success.
PANDA Program Manager Alicia Nicosia had this to say,
“Volunteers and their therapy dogs have provided child victims of sexual assault with the support of gentle and loving dogs at 65 meetings at the Orange County District Attorney’s Office. This successful program is helping to promote justice with compassion.”
While Kevin Marlin had this to say,
"I remember one young girl who was just beginning the process of a trial, and she was visibly uncomfortable until Patriot came over and nudged her with his nose. The girl grabbed hold of him and cried. They made a strong connection, and the girl was able to move on with her story. She didn’t want to leave Patriot that day when she was finished."
While it is still unknown who originally abused Patriot, Patriot's survival serves as a brave reminder of strength and courage. It's a reminder that Kevin is very vocal about.
"He wears his scars to remind us all about his story of survival and forgiveness. He’s an incredible dog. It’s an honor to have him in my life and spend my days working with him.”
3. Larry The Cable Guy Has Emotional Interview Over His Humble Gratitude For "Cars"
The only thing Pixar fans hate more than "Cars" is "Cars 2," and while "Cars 2" is one killer action-packed blast of a movie--yeah, I'll defend "Cars 2"...come at me--"Cars" is widely regarded as one of Pixar's biggest misfires. Combining a weird concept with the then unused bathroom humor, "Cars" served as Pixar's first descent into mainstream mediocrityBut to Larry the Cable Guy, "Cars" was the greatest thing to ever happen to him.
In a highly entertaining interview earlier this year with Graham Bensinger, Larry the Cable Guy breaks down discussing the opportunity that one of the greatest animation studios in film history reached out to him for a role.
"'I got the part? Really?' and then bam! I just started crying," he recalls.
The segment of the interview is featured in the clip below. It's a fascinating insight into a person known for the red-neck southerner character his brand perceives him at. You don't need to love Larry the Cable Guy or even "Cars" to appreciate it. All you need is an open heart and maybe a tissue or two.
4. Stylist Spends 13 Hours With Depressed Teen, Repairing Her Matted Hair For School Photos
When young Kayley Olsson clocked in for work at a salon, she probably had no idea saving a depressed sixteen-year-old was on the schedule for her. The anonymous teenager had undergone extreme clinical depression and was in such distress, even the simple act of brushing her hair was too much for her.
With school photos on the horizon, the teenager walked into the salon and asked for her entire hair to be shaved off so her disgusting, matted hair would no longer be an issue. Kayley Olsson knew the sensitive issue placed in front of her and decided to do something about it.
Spending thirteen full hours combing, cutting, straightening, curling, and replacing the teen's hair, Kayley had transformed the once matted hair into a beautiful head of curly, blond locks. When asked why Kayley went above and beyond to perform such an incredible act of kidness, she had this to say,
“At the end of the day I want this to be a lesson to people. MENTAL HEALTH is a thing, it affects people all around the world and of all ages! PARENTS take it serious, don’t just push your kids off and tell them to get over something they legitimately can’t. A CHILD should NEVER feel so worthless to not even want to brush their hair.”
Overcome with emotion, Kayley and the teenager enjoyed a moment of silence to bask in the miraculous change that had just occurred. It was after this moment of silence that the teen looked up to Kayley and said
"I will actually smile for my school’s pictures today, you made me feel like me again.”
