Too often, us humans become almost synced in with our daily problems. In effect, we sink deeper and deeper into this everlasting phenomenon known as stress. How do we cure it? No one really knows, but there are ways to minimize its impact, both physically and mentally.
So whaddya say? Are you ready to make your stress go away? Jk, I already told you there's no way to cure it...so suck it up buttercup. But let's look at some ways to decrease your stress in 3..... 2..... 1......
1. Stay present.
Yeah, you heard (or read?) me right. Stay present. How does one stay present, you ask? Let me give you an example: Becky's been having a rough day. When she got up this morning, she rolled off her bed and fell flat on her face. Okay, not the best thing to happen to someone but it's not the end of the world. But it gets worse. After she managed to prop herself up, she got a phone call from someone harboring some disappointing news. After hanging up the phone, Becky starts to wonder everything in life is going bad for her and starts to dwell on that "fact," or what she perceives to be a fact. Do you know what Becky is doing wrong here?
She's dwelling on the past instead of staying in the present. If you just went through something or begin to feel anxious about something that's going to happen in the future, consciously shift your focus back to where you are right now.
Even if you're not a master of shifting focus, just thinking about being in the present moment will bring you to where you are right now. Take life one moment at a time and you'll begin to notice how much less worrisome you'll become.
If you'd like to know more about how to live in the present moment, I highly recommend the book The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle. It can be a life-changer if you let it be.
2. Set aside time to do deep-breathing techniques.
Through the craziness of life, it's easy to let our minds wander off and begin to stress over our problems. But taking the time to do some deep-breathing will do wonders in the long-term. Start by breathing in and focusing your attention in on your breath. Continue doing this as you exhale. Just bring all your attention to your breath, through every inhale and exhale. Yup... That's right. Do this for a minute or two at a time and notice how you feel afterward. Using these techniques allows one to feel calmer and centered, which is vital for decreasing stress.
3. Use affirmations.
I know, cliche, but it works. Let me rephrase that, it can work but only if you know how to do it the right way. Affirmations are meant to serve as a positive or encouraging proclamation to oneself in order to reframe the mind into believing they are true. For example, if you're stressed out about a work project, event, etc., affirmations that you may want to use are, "I will do great on this project" or "I will conquer this situation."
Even if you don't believe in the truth of these affirmations, through repetition, you're transferring these beliefs to your subconscious, or unconscious, mind. Now you don't need to constantly repeat these affirmations to yourself for them to take effect. But when you do them, at least attempt to believe in the affirmations, although you might not at the moment.
4. Pray.
Research shows that praying is linked to a decrease in stress. Get in tune with your spirituality, your beliefs, and pray. Knowing there is a God out there, for whatever reason, helps people through an abundant amount of issues, whether it be depression, physical illnesses, or, of course, stress. I personally believe that praying decreases one's stress because you know there is an external source who is in control of the situation, no matter how out of control the situation may seem.
