365 Day Poetry Goal: Week 9
Wynn Smith

It is now week 9. It really has been a journey since I have started this. Over the past week I actually listened to a lot of musicians for the first time. One of them is Bon Iver. His ambiguous style of writing has had an immediate influence on my writing. For some reason it really just clicked with me. It’s funny, because people seem to like it a lot more than my previous style. So why not roll with it? I like the process of creating an ambiguous sentence that you can still extract meaning from. It’s actually like a word game, really.

As usual, for those of you who do not know why I am doing this, I will quote my first article here:

“I have realized that a great way to keep sane when you’re busy (especially with very tedious work) is to keep your creativity flowing. So recently, I have decided to start a sort of creative goal for myself. I’m going to write 365 poems. That is one every day without stopping. This is all free form and off the cuff. So if it’s short, long, good, and/or crap, that is up for you to decide.”

Please enjoy.

I just started listening to Bon Iver, and I like his ambiguous style of writing lyrics. It can be considered pretentious, but you can't know whether something works or not if your don't try! Let's see how these go.

Caught

The Opposite knows the geometry
Whether knowing or unwittingly
Like a cultural gathering
Taught to hurt so gently

Invisible scars they're battling
Passive aggressive release
The roads they're tackling
With no sign of reprieve

Hindered.
They see no road
Just a fork
Black and white
No middle ground

Please drop that weight
Contrived to satiate
Easy to acclimate
Fixed to operate

Invisible scars they're battling
Passive aggressive release
The roads they're tackling
With no sign of reprieve

Surrendered.
Follow, they know
It can work
Wrong or right
We're primal bound

This is how it continues

---

Once again, this is inspired by Bon Iver. I purposefully tried to keep each line just three syllables and redundant. All of the lines do relate to each other, so it’s really based on how well I wrote it whether you can see the connections or not.

There for me
There’s no we
Too much greed
Too much greed
Under the glee
There for me
Just to flee
Complacency

Underwhelmed
Lonely selves
Where we held
Overwhelmed
On the shelves
On the shelves
You’re quelled
I’m compelled

If we must
Lost all trust
Couldn’t brush
Couldn’t brush
Lost in lust
Lost all trust
Never hush
Always crush

There always
There always
Precious days
Selfish ways
There always
There always
Can’t you stay,
Anyway?

---

I never thought that Bon Iver would inspire me so much to write, but it sure has! I like his ambiguous writing style, and it seems like I'm not the only one!

How We Are Grown

A lonely soul looking for someone sold
Regrets made through the mountain cold
Can’t turn off what he was told
Getting too old, getting too old

Why can’t he suffer alone?
It’s just how he was grown
Bringing his past into the home
From the home, full of drones

A stray picking up another

She let him in, for her sake
For hope that he would take
Her soul was always a closed gate
What’s at stake, what’s at stake?

Why can’t she suffer alone?
It’s just how she was grown
Bringing her past into the home
From the home, full of drones

A stray picking up another

Likes like opposites
Love’s kind paralysis
Likes like opposites
Love’s kind paralysis

A stray picking up another

---

I’m really keeping up with this. I was getting kind of worried about being redundant after around poem 45, but I have a lot more inspiration around me than I originally thought!

Merry-Go-Round

Obsessive to the hilt
My mind is a merry-go-round
Using crutches for stilts
Regret is all that I’ve found
Regret with which is abound

The first time we did this
Pristine moments in frames
Sealed off with a kiss
Corrupted with moral distain
Psychology left in vain

Overthinking everything
Turns out to be wrong
Wasn’t enough imagining
For far too long
Coming on much too strong

Possession of it all
Embracing what we know
Believing in your call
When is it that we’ll go?
How, I have fallen so low?

Obsessive to the hilt
My mind is a merry-go-round
Using crutches for stilts
Regret is all that I’ve found
Regret with which is abound

This one can be taken like a mental process of two people who enjoyed their time together, but had to separate because of circumstances. It's not just one side speaking, but both sides at once. Hence why the wording is jumbled and repeated. They're both thinking the same thing.

Can't Ever Go Back

Opposite of what we had
Opposites attract
Where did it go?
It was there yesterday
Forward thinking now
It’s better this way
Miss those days
Miss everything
That last kiss
It meant nothing?
Opposite of what we had
Can’t ever go back
Can’t ever go back
Felling glad for that
It’s better this way
Miss those days
Miss everything
But you’re leaving?
Or was that just me?
Now I see…
Just been blaming
Mistrust so terribly
You’ve been training
Just here miserably
Where did it go?
It was there yesterday
Forward thinking now
It’s better this way
Can’t ever go back
Can’t ever go back
No words to say
Left on the track
Those bright days
Those dark days...
...
"Can’t ever go back"

If you look up the "Bystander Effect" this poem will make a lot of sense.

Bystander

In the dark, can’t find anyone
A presence is there
Still feel completely alone
Show a sign of care

Slow death in operation
Under the light of heaven
Just another incantation
Perception since seven

Isolation in a crowd
Moving walls of fire
Voices ever so loud
None of them desired

Push them out
Friendly stares
Writhing about
On the stairs

Younger than maturity
For the feelings inside
Living in reverie
That always subsides

In the dark, can’t find anyone
A presence is there
Still feel completely alone
Show a sign of care

We all have those moments with some people where they show their true selves, and how they really are. This piece is an offshoot of that realization.

Banal Lies

Choking on banal lies
With cries I cannot sympathize
Retracting those wondrous eyes
The moment that I realize

Pressing forward relentlessly
I’m here understandably
Can’t see the pathology
Insight into futility

Uncouth in so many ways
I believed in it everyday
Humility can dissipate
When the opposite has taken shape

Traverse through your mind
With care relative to time
No foundation to get behind
Zero chance to unwind

Treatments that demoralize
Memories that cauterize
All that you comprise
The moment that I realize
You’re choking on banal lies

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

20264

StableDiffusion

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

124502

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
