35 Thoughts I Had During College Band Camp
Melissa Schoenlein

Over the course of the last week, I moved into my dorm at Bowling Green State University and as I write this, I finished my first day of classes. But, I did move in early because I am a part of the Falcon Marching Band. Doing college marching band was a big leap from doing high school marching band already, but I definitely did have many different thoughts during the week that I didn't realize that I would have.

Here are a couple of them. (Yes, these are all some things that I was thinking during band camp).

1. Finally, the day is here!

2. Oh my god now I'm walking to a meeting without my parents.

3. On my own, pretending he's beside me...

4. Why did I think of Les Misérables in that time?

5. Alright, I'm here! College of Musical Arts!

6. Oh hey, I'm next to a girl in that Snapchat group I'm in.

7. Aaaaaaaannnnnnddddd I'm bored.

8. OK sectional time!

9. Lunch!!

10. Great I got to drop my shit my mom ordered off.

11. God I miss my mom.

12. IM DYING!!!!!

13. IT'S DAY TWO AND THE ARCHES OF MY LEFT FOOT FEEL LIKE I PULLED SOMETHING!!

14. I HAVE TO HIGH STEP NOW?! HASHTAG SAVE ME!

15. And now the back of my right ankle hurts.

16. I miss high school marching band now.

17. I'm seriously trying to memorize but this is hard to relearn everything new.

18. My roommate arrives on Thursday and I'm alone for a couple of days... cue "On My Own" again.

19. FREE FOOD!! Until the meal plan starts.

20. Yes, I know I'm doing this wrong no need to tell me I know to fix it.

21. I'm trying my hardest the area where my Achilles heel is is killing me!

22. I want my family again.

23. Oh my god we're not going to be outside in the humid weather!!

24. I really want to go with the section but I'm meeting my roommate for the very first time for lunch.

25. So this is what it's like to be with someone who's not a band geek again.

26. Oh please tell me that wasn't my upper heel again that's killing me!

27. Should I tell my squad leader I can't do the university welcome?

28. Well, that wasn't that hard.

29. Now I got the chant stuck in my head from that cadence.

30. I actually now wish that I was doing band instead of the meetings but the meetings are so important.

31. Oh my god the shows we're doing this year are so awesome!!

32. Aww, mom sent me a video of Deacon

33. ... I MISS MY DOG!!

34. I wouldn't trade the time I had during band camp for anything.

35. Can I print a new Achilles heel?

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
