It's a Saturday afternoon; instead of swimming in the summer heat, you are sitting on your couch and watching as the drops of rain patter against the window. This is not how you wanted to spend your first day off in a week and the gloomy weather is getting you down, but it doesn't have to be that way. With a few simple ideas, anyone can make a day of dark and depressing weather into a day of fun, relaxation, and creativity. Whether you want to make DIY candles, play drunk balloon tennis, or collect clothes you no longer wear for donation, there is something on this list that everyone can appreciate.

1. Make a DIY candle

There are many ways to make candle wax and the recipes vary. With a bit of research on Pinterest, you can easily find a DIY craft that is perfect for rainy days and an end result that makes your rainy day cozier than ever.

2. Color coordinate your closet

This activity may be more fun for people who like to organize, but it can be worth it if you have a big closet with a lot of clothes, and tend to have a tough time finding what you want to wear.

3. Bake a triple layered brownie

It's quite simple. All you need for a triple layered brownie is cookie dough, easy brownie mix, and Oreo cookies. For the first layer of the brownie, you spread the cookie dough on the bottom of the baking pan. After that, you place plain Oreo cookies on top of the cookie dough base. When you are done mixing the brownie mix with proper ingredients, you pour it over the other two ingredients and pop it into the oven.

4. Have a spa day with a DIY facial mask

5. Watch a movie from every decade

You might not be able to do this all in one day, but many rainy days occur during hurricane season and surely you can finish a movie for every decade before the season ends.

6. Learn how to knit or crochet

7. Pick a book you can read in one sitting

Reading a book on a rainy day may seem obvious, but have you ever tried reading an entire book in one sitting? Set up a comfortable blanket fort in your bedroom, grab a short book off of your shelf, and relax with a cup of tea.

8. Make a homemade coffee scrub for the bath

9. Paint a blank mug

10. Play drunk balloon tennis

It sounds like a crazy idea, but it can be really fun if you have a gang of friends over the house. All you really need is a bag of balloons, plastic fly swatters, and a bit of alcohol to make it more than just child's play.

11. Mini target golf course

Do you have any empty boxes lying around in your garage? Cut square holes into them and set them up around your house similar to a mini golf course. You can substitute for a golf club with the end of a broom and use a round fruit for the golf ball.

12. Create a daily inspiration jar

For this craft, you need to create a jar that will inspire you to pick quotes from it each day for motivation. If you don't want to put quotes in it, you can always put future goals in it to spur on some motivation.

13. Tie dye your socks

Tie dying a giant t-shirt might be a bit complicated due to the fact that it'd be raining outside and you have limited indoor space, but tie dying a pair of socks is easy as long as you some paper towels during the drying process.

14. Write a play

Don't put too much thought into how the writing is turning out and just write down all of the characters, voices, and situations that come to mind.

15. Go through old clothes that you don't want for donations

16. Decorate an old book

Grab all of those colorful sharpies stuffed away in your desk drawer, print out some stencils to cut out, and create a beautiful design on hardcover of an unused book.

17. Play the hot sauce challenge

Perfect for a rainy day in a dorm, the hot sauce challenge is sure to put your tongue to the test. For this challenge, you need to write down every food item in your fridge on tiny scrapes of paper and toss them into a bowl. Pick a food from the bowl and put a teaspoon of hot sauce on it. It is pretty simple and gets pretty gross.

18. Make a DIY light-bulb with sharpies

19. Update your resume

It's something that you have to do every couple of years, and for college students it seems like every couple of months. There's no better time to update your resume than on a rainy day when you have nothing else to do.

20. Make a DIY stick candle holder

Take a quick trip outside and grab some fallen twigs to create this woodsy candle holder. After giving the twigs a good dry, hot-glue them onto the side of your candle holder and it creates instant cozy decor.

21. Watch a cartoon from your childhood

22. Distress some of your old clothing

23. Practice interviewing yourself

Do a brief search about general questions that employers ask in your field and practice answering those questions in front of a mirror. Even if interviews are not meant to be perfect, it's always beneficial to practice.

24. Cook an entirely vegan meal

I can only assume that many people reading this article are not already vegan, so challenge your cooking skills and make an entire meal only consisting of vegan recipes and products.

25. Collage your future goals

26. Vacuum your ceilings

It's not something everyone wants to do, but it is very necessary to keep cobwebs under control. A spider's favorite place to hide when it rains is a dry place—also known as the corner and ceilings of your bedroom. Whip out that vacuum and get into those cobweb covered corners before more creepy crawlers make a nice home there.

27. Organize your paperwork

28. Play scrabble

29. Organize your laptop files

It's not a fun activity, but can prove to be very helpful in getting rid of files that eat up a lot of your gigabytes and space on your laptop. Additionally, permanently deleting files will make your laptop faster may even help you find some old pictures you didn't know you still had.

30. Press plant life

Throw on your raincoat and collect fallen plant life outside. From leaves to flowers, pick up whatever you think is unique and let it dry. If the item is a leaf or a flower pedal, press it between the pages of a hardcover book.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
