3 Ways To Have A Successful Summer

Summer should not be all work and no play, but it should not be all play and no work either.

3 Ways To Have A Successful Summer
Glen Jackson

Spring has just started, why am I already thinking about summer? As much as I love spring, summer is the time when I get things done. It is a time when I can focus on myself rather than focusing mostly on school. I am one of those people who puts my all in school work, what can I say?

I use summer as a time to put school on the back burner and work on myself - mentally, physically... or both. I think summer is one of the seasons that you should plan ahead for, contrary to popular belief. Here are 3 ways to have the perfect summer and if you follow these, you will walk into fall feeling already accomplished.

1. Figure out what you want to do.

During the spring, you should figure out what you want to do over the summer. If you go in without an idea, then you will spend your summer searching for what you want to do and achieve. Eventually, summer will end and you’ll realize that you wasted it if you spend your days doing absolutely nothing. You will wish that you planned ahead so you won’t leave the summer with only a tan.

Usually, during the first half of summer, I attend swim practice every morning and then do nothing for the rest of the day. The days fly by and I don't get anything done, but now, I will focus on myself and use my summer to better who I am.

2. Write down your goals for the summer.

I don’t know about you, but after summer, I periodically feel like I wasted a break. I would get ready for school, wishing to go back accomplishing more than an even tan. I'll write down what I want to achieve over the break to continuously remind me of my goals. This will help me go into summer with a plan and with driving motivation. I know what I want to get done and can check off what I finish over the course of the months.

One of the best feelings of accomplishing something is checking it off a list, I promise. The goals you make can be anything; big, small, mental, or physical. They could be anything you want to get done like getting a job, learning something new, going on a hike once a week, anything.

3. Think of a few activities you want to do.

Summer should not be all work and no play. Remember while in grade school, summer used to be every day at the pool with friends and only having a little bit of summer work to do? It may not be as possible to have a summer like that now, seeing as our futures are quickly approaching and we have to begin to plan for them.

However, that doesn’t mean we can’t have as much fun as we used to. You have to remember to give yourself time to relax because it really is the main reason for the summer break. There is always time to do fun activities, you just have put them into action. While you are working, thinking of going to the beach or on a bike ride is not going to relax you, you actually have to do it, not just lay on the couch watching your 100th episode of the show on Netflix you've been plowing through.

Let yourself live this summer and every summer – do not keep it all work.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
