So let's start of by saying that college is hard in general, no matter the major. Every day is filled with endless work, or a new test to study for, or an additional paper to write. And once you move to your upper division class, things just get more difficult. And for me, that is especially true. So if you're planning on asking me or any other future teacher anything about our future career, please think before you speak, or more specifically, please don't say these five things.
1. "Your major is so easy! All you have to do is learn how to teach!"
Uh, sorry, no it is most definitely not. It's more than "learning to teach". It's learning to work with how to handle situations that may not be in your favor. It's knowing that there will be kids with learning disabilities, or physical disabilities, or ADHD, and trying to do what is best for them. It's taking classes that are so much harder than the curriculum you will end up teaching. It's staying up night after night working on lesson plans, all while making sure it will be beneficial to your students' learning (I may not be there yet, but I know it will come sooner than I think and I know for a fact that it will be difficult). It's having to take multiple tests and having to pass them in order to receive a teaching license. Sounds like a breeze, right?
2. "You don't even make a good amount of money".
If you think we're in it for the dough, think again. For the nth time, we're not in it for the money. We want to teach because we want to make a difference in children's lives. Personally, making a difference in a child's life is FAR more important than money. I honestly think that if your thoughts come out this way, something is wrong, because your life skills and your career itself beats money any day. As long as I'm making a difference in someone's life, then I'm satisfied.
3. "Teaching is so pointless, I don't get why you want to do it".
*screams into hands* Please, please, PLEASE don't say this out in public because chances are, an education major is standing right near you. Way to make us feel like we have a worthless future. Teaching is the exact opposite of pointless. We teach because we want to make a difference in a child's life; we want to be their superheroes. We want to be someone they can come to whenever they have a problem or are in need. We teach them all they need to know so they can blossom and grow with knowledge, and they can grow up to start a family, have a career, and be successful. That sounds SOOOO pointless, right?
So please, stop dissing education majors. Teaching is one of the most inspirational jobs out there, and like me, I'm sure many other future educators can't wait for their first day in the classroom.
