Three Struggles Of Living With Your Parents Over The Summer

Parents: over-protective, yet loving, creatures. When we were younger we didn't really see a problem living with them. We did our chores, obeyed our curfews, and listened to what they told us. Besides, we kind of had to listen to them because they fed us.

It's different when you're older though. You see all the dumb things you had to do before and totally feel a lack of freedom. When you finally go away to college and live on your own it's incredible. You can go wherever you want, no one is checking in on you all the time, you can eat what you want, etc.

Eventually though, that freedom ends for a short while. Like most college kids, I come home during the summers to work, therefore I end up living with my parents again for three months. Don't get me wrong, I love my family, but there are some things about living at home that I can't stand.

1. Your freedom is practically revoked.

There are not enough words to describe how angry I get when I'm told I'm not allowed to do something. When I'm back at school, in my own apartment, I can do whatever I want. I can stay up all night. I can blast music. I can leave my house and don't have to text anybody when I get there. I don't have to ask permission to go somewhere.

I think when we come home our parents forget we are adults now. I am a junior in college and when I'm home for the summer I have to ask my mom if I'm allowed to stay the night at a friends house, or if I can go to a concert in a week. I have to be at my parents mercy pretty much.

2. Complete lack of privacy.

I only have one roommate at college and it's nice because we respect each others boundaries. We knock if their bedroom door is closed, don't kick the bathroom door open, etc. None of that happens when you're home. My mom likes to bust down my door when I'm getting ready to go somewhere, which I get if you know I'm fully dressed. However, she will bust in my room, and when I tell her not to look she says something like, Oh who cares I changed your diapers. Nope, still not okay.

3. Food thieves.

A few times a month I will go out to eat, and if you leave leftovers in my fridge for over a day they will be gone. I guess my family has some secret rule that if food is left unattended for more than a day than it's fair game to anyone, which is bullshit! I threatened my little brother a few days ago because he ate my Olive Garden leftovers. No touchy you vultures.

I love my family and my hometown dearly, but man do you miss your freedom over the summer.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
