An internet sensation that shouldn't have been one.
Tide Pods were created in 2012, as a way for people no longer worry about the amount of detergent that we should pour to clean our laundry. The only fear then was worrying about little kids eating them because little kids are known to consume everything that comes there way, especially if its colorful and small. Since then, there have been efforts made to provide secure closing caps, a sticker that said keep it out of children's reach and recommending parents to place the Tide Pods out of reach of children.
In 2012 it was little kids. In 2018, it is teenagers.
Somehow wherever it originated from, teenagers, are now consuming or at least biting into Tide Pods and releasing the concentrated chemicals into their digestive system and destroying it. You might ask why, but even the possible answers to why they are doing it doesn't really explain it well. The suggested answers are to be an internet popular hit. But are you a hit if you suffer from burning sensations after biting into a Tide Pod. Does the fame last longer than the after burn?
Not every internet challenge or trend was necessarily stupid and hurtful, some simply was used for entertainment and not physically life-threatening entertainment.
Here is a list of 3 Internet Sensations (or Trends) that are safer than the Tide Pods Challenge:
1. Mannequin Challenge (2016)
The idea was to stand still doing an action while music played in the background and one person was recording it all happening. The typical song played in the background of "Mannequin Challenge," videos was Rae Sremmurd- Black Beatles ft. Gucci Mane. (according to telegraph.co.uk)
2. Ice Bucket Challenge (2014)
The Ice Bucket Challenge was made to gain attention to ALS association. The idea was challenging other people to dump buckets on their heads within a 24 hour timeframe, and if they didn't they had to donate money to the ALS association. This challenge sparked more research into finding treatments.
3. Running Man Challenge (2016)
Categorized as more of a trend than a challenge, it still became an internet sensation, where various people 'run-dance' or 'Running man dance' to the song, "My Boo," (1996 Ghost Town DJs). Started by the Kevin Vincent and Jerry Hall.
These are some of the previous challenges that were an internet sensation before 2018. These are the challenges that we should be sticking too, not the life-threatening Tide Pod Challenge.
