There's so many meals that you could make when your family comes to visit for the holidays that it becomes hard to keep track of them all. Luckily, not all recipes are created equally, so here are some of the best ones:

Appetizer: Marinated Beet Toasts with Yogurt

https://www.realsimple.com/food-recipes/browse-all-recipes/marinated-beet-toasts-yogurt

Time required: 20 mins

Yield: 8 servings of 2 pieces each

It's time to rethink the boring toast that you've been having for breakfast every morning and bring it to life to kick off your holiday gatherings. A savory treat featuring ricotta, mashed white beans, or hummus, drizzled with olive oil and finished with salt and pepper, it's got a little bit of what everyone loves. The spices and seasonings included in the recipe make sure that this won't just be another bland option for your guests. No more setting out chips and dip, it's time to get creative (and in only 20 minutes!). (See the link above for steps)

Ingredients:

  • 1 pound pre-cooked, vacuum-packed beets (6-10 depending on size), sliced into ¼-inch wedges
  • 1 small shallot, finely chopped
  • 3 tablespoons balsamic vinegar
  • 4 tablespoons olive oil, divided
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt, divided
  • ½ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper, divided
  • 1½ cups full-fat plain Greek yogurt
  • 2 tablespoons prepared horseradish
  • 1 1 lb. loaf whole-grain bread, sliced ½-inch thick, toasted and halved
  • 1 small bunch radishes, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons chopped chives, for serving

Time required: 1 hour and 15 minutes

Yield: 6 servings

Time to wrap a pig in some more pig, but in a classy way. This is an easy, quick, and delicious recipe for your holiday gathering that is sure to disappear quickly. From the crispy outside to the soft inside, from the strong coating flavors to the simpler flavors within, this dish truly has it all and will make a wonderful entree. The recipe yields perfectly cooked, moist pork, wrapped in crispy bacon with a sweet-and-salty layer of dried cherries, parsley, and mustard in between. This is a serious comfort food right here, so be careful. (See link above for steps)

Ingredients:

  • 1 2-pound piece boneless pork loin
  • ½ teaspoon ground allspice
  • black pepper
  • ½ cup dried cherries, chopped
  • ½ cup fresh flat-leaf parsley, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon whole-grain mustard
  • 6 slices bacon
  • 1 tablespoon currant jelly
  • 1 teaspoon red wine vinegar

Dessert: Gingersnap Cherry Cheesecake

https://www.realsimple.com/food-recipes/browse-all-recipes/gingersnap-cherry-cheesecake

Time required: 5 hours

Yield: 12 servings

I'm a serious sucker for cheesecake. How could you not be? And this cheesecake has everything a cheesecake needs: the flavor kick, the crumbiness, and the sweetness. Sure, it may take a while to prepare (even though it's only 20 minutes of hands-on baking), but having a dish like this that you're sure to be complimented on is worth it. The balance that this dessert will provide to the rest of this 3-course meal is great as well. (See link above for steps)

Ingredients:

  • 3 cups ground gingersnap cookies
  • ½ cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, melted
  • 3 8-ounce bars cream cheese, at room temperature
  • 1¼ cups sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 cups sour cream
  • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  • ½ cup cherry preserves

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
