25 Things College has Taught Me In My First Semester
Scott Webb

Going to college has always been on my to-do list. I knew at the ripe young age of seven that I would go to college and learn very important things that would somehow prepare me for a job. What I did not realize about college is that I would learn a lot more outside of the classroom. Here is a list of things that college has taught me within my first semester.

1. Never underestimate the power of a microwave

I learned how to make pasta in my microwave after a month and it was the best thing ever.

2. Get involved on campus

You'll be so much happier.

3. But not too involved

Really.. do not over do yourself by joining 6 clubs (trust me).

4. TRY GREEK LIFE

I never thought that I would EVER join a sorority, but here I am, as happy as can be with all my zistas.

5. Do not be afraid to just walk up to someone and start talking

People are friendly, and they won't bite.

6. Seriously...

It may seem creepy, but I promise that is how you will make all your friends.

7. Attempting to dress nice everyday will not last long...

You get tired of it and leggings seem like a better idea.

8. Really I promise, no one will judge you...

People in college don't care about what you wear.

9. TAKE YOUR CLOTHES OUT THE DRYER PLEASE

(Tbh, this one is more of a PSA to everyone in UC2) No one wants to have to take your stuff out of the dryer.

10. Hats will become your best friend

Bad hair day or didn’t put on makeup? Just throw on a hat.

11. BE AUTHENTIC

Yes, I know the saying goes “college is a time to reinvent yourself” but that does not mean change who you are as a person.

12. You will make new friends

And that is okay.

13. Eating alone may seem weird

But it is one of the best times of the day.

14. FRESHMAN 15 is real…

Like, seriously real.

15. On that note, check out the gym

It'll save you from the freshman 15 and from stress.

16. The divide of freshmen and upperclassmen does not exist

Honestly, no one cares.

17. MEAN GIRLS/BOYS HAVE NO PLACE IN COLLEGE

LEAVE THAT IN HIGH SCHOOL. Thanks.

18. If you are like me and don’t sleep, Netflix will become your BFF

It's with me when I'm alone trying to find the urge to sleep.

19. Late night chats with randoms

Studying in the Bakery or in line at the C Store? Strike up a convo. I've met some of my favorite people this way.

20. Dry shampoo is a life-saver

Sometimes we don't always wake up in enough time to shower.

21. Naps...

Will become your most favorite time of the day.

22.Think you have a strong immune system?

LOL WRONG. The Panther Plague will hit you soon (GO HPU).

23. Take lots of pictures

You need them for the memories.

24. You can never have too many t-shirts...

...or sweatshirts

25. Call your Mom and Dad!!

They probably miss you, even if you are just calling them to say “yes I am alive!"

Overall, College has taught me so much (and it has only been one semester). Let's see what Part 2 brings... STAY TUNED!

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Whether you met your new love interest online, through mutual friends, or another way entirely, you'll definitely want to know what you're getting into. I mean, really, what's the point in entering a relationship with someone if you don't know whether or not you're compatible on a very basic level?

Consider these 21 questions to ask in the talking stage when getting to know that new guy or girl you just started talking to:

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
