25 Phone Calls College Freshman Have With Their Mom

I get it, you’re a freshman in college, you can handle life all on your own right? Oh for sure. You can take on the world with one hand! Ha, think again. Don’t lie to me, or yourself, we both know you still call your mom in these situations because for some reason even when she is nowhere near you, she is the only one who can tell you the answer to all your problems and always knows what to do. Some of these I am guilty of and some come from other people around campus.

*Story shared with me

1. “Mom what do I do when my throat hurts?” {Admit it, you know what to do, but you still need the motherly touch of advice.

2. “That cute boy in my class asked me out but I’m not trying to date right now… but he is so cute!” {No worries, mom has your back saying to just meet for coffee, casual yet effective.

3. “The world hates me mom, all my professors assigned 5 hours of homework a piece!!” {All the walls in the world seem to be crashing down on you… leave it to mom to give you a reality check and remind you that no one hates you and everything will ease up soon enough.

4. *“I think the food at the dining center is inedible…” {“You’ll live sweetie”.

5. *When you just miss the comfort of being home and feel a little homesickness

6. *“Can you overdose on birth control?”

7. *“I lost the birth control pill I was supposed to take for today... what do I do??” {Mom: “Nothing. Get back on track tomorrow”

8. “Is my pet doing okay without me?” (You can’t help but ask this whenever you are away… your pet has our heart!)

9. *“Can I take both Benadryl and cough syrup together?” {Or just ask anytime you want to take 2 medications

10. “What’s our insurance?” {Probably should have this memorized by now but being an adult is hard

11. “Put Nellie on FaceTime” (Nellie is my cat)

12. “How do you make a resume?” {The job applications are starting

13. *“How do I make a dentist/doctor appointment?”

14. *“Can I wash whites and colors… I’m broke mom... washing clothes is expensive”

15. “What’s your credit card number?” {Times are hard as a freshman in college... deep breaths...

16. *I call my mom to talk to her about funny things I hear on campus

17. “Will you still love me even if I flunk out?”

18. (Sometimes our schedule doesn’t work with our mothers... like in this example shared with me) *Last time I called my mom she told me she was watching her favorite TV show and to call her back at a better time

19. “What’s my social security number?”

20. *Last time I called my mom she told me she didn’t mean to call me but wanted to talk to my twin (Its okay, this happens to everyone at least once)

21. *“How do I change a tire? Asking for a friend… (But actually can you help me?)”

22. “Can you come up and cook me dinner mom?”

23. *“I wasn’t going thaaaattt fast but the cop disagreed”

24. "I love you mom" {You can't say this enough

25. "No mom I don't need anything, I just wanted to call and say hi!"

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
