Like just about every other girl in America, I started experimenting with makeup. At first, all I could do was put a bit of color on my lids and call it a day, but as I got older and started dabbling into the world of beauty vlogging, I discovered that I liked makeup much more than just a swipe of color over the eyes. A few years have passed, and I honestly can't tell you if my skills have improved at all, but my passion for it has.
I have no shame in saying that I spend many hours watching Youtube tutorials and reviews, even knowing that my poor, broke college self will probably never be able to afford all the makeup I wish I could have. Even so, I love it--I love learning about it, I love practicing it, and most of all, I LOVE spending all my money on it. (And I know there are a lot of people out there just like me, staring in a mirror, speaking to no one but his or herself — "Hey guys, welcome back to my Youtube channel. Today's look is...")
1. You spend your free time watching makeup tutorials
You start with one 10-minute video and suddenly its 3 hours later and you've now watched at least six "5 Minute Makeup" challenges and have no explanation for why.
2. You have favorite artists
Be it Youtubers like Manny MUA, Tati Westbrook, and Laura Lee, or IG artists like @vladamua, you definitely have at least that one person whose art you look up to.
3. ...Who you ALWAYS try to imitate
4. You narrate your makeup routine as you go through it
"Okay, so first we're gonna go in with primer. This is the Porefessional from Benefit..." and the saga goes on from there. No one may be listening, but you continue on anyway.
5. Being complimented on your makeup is the highest form of praise
Nothing is more rewarding than having someone recognize your hard work.
6. Seriously... ALL your free time
7. Not to mention, ALL your money, too
I can hear my wallet actually crying every time I walk past the makeup aisle in any store.
8. Words like "shade," "undertone," and "baking" have totally different meanings to you than normal people
9. You get excited for new launches
And brands are always coming out with bigger and better things, so the cycle never really ends.
10. You know your way around Sephora and Ulta like it's your own home
11. You could talk about makeup for hours
If you don't want me to talk nonstop, I highly suggest avoiding the topic of makeup.
12. You're constantly finding makeup in random places
Gotta love that feeling of relief when you finally find that eyeshadow palette that you've been looking for in a handbag in the back of your closet (I sadly speak from experience).
13. Your friends come to you for recommendations
You're looking for a cheap, drugstore eyeliner? I can recommend you six.
14. You know the struggle of finding the right foundation shade
Some are too orange, some are too dark, some are too pale. There sometimes just isn't any winning.
15. Doing your makeup is the best part of going out
16. But sometimes you get tired halfway through
Beating your face takes a lot of energy, okay?
17. You'll go out in public with an elaborate makeup look but your hair looking like a rat's nest
Makeup is fun--you can be creative, try new looks, go the whole nine yards or stick to the natural look. But hair is a different story, and a lot of the time, just isn't worth the effort.
18. You love perfecting your skills
Perfecting winged eyeliner is honestly as hard as it sounds (and looks).
19. You know the struggle of getting makeup out of clothes
20. You've perfected the art of tearing up without messing up your mascara
Tilt your head back and blink. If that doesn't work, you better dab those tears up quick or you'll be in for a runny disaster
21. You can do your own makeup but NEVER anyone else's
I don't know why, but it's just so much easier when it's your own face.
