For those who are not aware, Boiler Gold Rush is the new student orientation program here at Purdue University. Teams leaders are student volunteers who mentor and guide new students during their first week on campus. Since the Boiler Gold Rush Team Leader callouts just happened and interviews are just around the corner, I thought I could shed some light on why everyone wants to be a team leader.
1. It's fun.
2. F is for friends who do stuff together.
You meet a ton of random people and for some reason you decide you like them. So then you never have to do anything alone again.
3. Two words: Resume. Builder.
Anything you do voluntarily that requires being awake before noon looks good on a resume.
4. You get to wear costumes, often as a group.
The professors name in Powerpuff Girls was Professor Utonium. You're welcome.
5. You feel superior.
Finally! Your vast knowledge of campus and college life will come in handy.
6. Hellaconia forever.
Who doesn't want to wear the same color T-shirt as 100 of their closest friends for a week.
7. Fanny packs are back.
You can earn a free fanny pack or bring your own.
8. You're kind of in a gang, but like, not really.
Everyone gets a bandanna corresponding to their hall team. How you choose to wear said bandanna is entirely your decision.
9. Automatic bad hair day excuse.
It is like 80 degrees and you are carrying mini fridges upstairs or dragging your beacon along.
10. Dolphins.
You get to have inside jokes and traumatizing conversations with your group.
11. You don't have to fight the urge to break out in dance anymore.
Everyone has that one song they just can not resist getting their groove on to.
12. Also you can sing really badly if you want to.
Lame guy: 'Who sings that song again?"
Cool TL:"Me, I sing this song now"
Lame guy: "Ugh, you always ruin my jokes."
13. Cat massages.
This could have been unique to my experience but this heavenly girl in my hall team randomly offered to rub and pop all our backs during move in mania. Regardless, everyone is super nice and will probably do nice things for you.
14. YouTube videos.
There are times that aren't full of activities and whether they are during training or the week of you will undoubtedly come out of BGR with an arsenal of hilarious YouTube videos at the ready.
15. Common Bond dance.
We all know this dance is lame but it is still so much fun and I will keep doing it til I die.
16. You get to make other people play ice breakers.
Nothing is more entertaining than watching a group of strangers play "Baby I love you."
17. Team leaders know stuff.
The collective knowledge of the BGR staff is unreal. If you want to know about something there is someone in the organization that can tell you all about it.
18. You get to break out your selfie stick.
19. Everyone knows your name.
Because name tags.
20. Fountain runs.
21. BGR love is real.
By far my favorite thing about being a team leader was that not even five minutes after meeting a fellow team leader we were always already on the hugging level of friendship. Everybody just loves everybody else and it's great.
In conclusion, everyone wants to be a Team Leader for BGR because, well, it's just that awesome.
