20 Is The Most Overlooked Year, And What A Shame That Is

20 Is The Most Overlooked Year, And What A Shame That Is

To the ones entering their 20s,

You are young.

Yet, why does it feel as if time is going by so quickly and your youth is becoming more and more behind you each day?

Although, yes, that is true, I feel as if being a 20 year old is going to be such an amazing thing for my next couple of years of doing life…

I think people underestimate how liberating turning the “irrelevant” age of 20 actually is.

Being a 20-year-old, I truly have come to a quick awakening that now is the time to make mistakes. Now is the time to take chances, because messing up and learning lessons should happen earlier on in life and turn into those memories that you laugh about in the future.

Being 20 has taught me that now truly is MY time. I have learned that I should be selfish and prioritize myself. I should put my needs above my tendency to put others first. I should do dumb things and take risks that I can laugh at later — it is OK.

This moment right now in time is a second that we will never get back, so we might as well go ahead and make the most of every single day that we can (cliche, I know — but also true). Although I have come to such a happy and content place in my life, I am still discovering things about myself and about this life each and every day that goes by. Life is beautiful and there really is so much to learn. I have realized that these experiences will help me to grow as a person and I have nothing to lose (within reason, of course) by going for things and putting myself out there in this chaotic world.

Being 20 calls for opportunity.

We are no longer teenagers, yet we somehow don’t have the full responsibility of being full- grown adults.

Being 20 calls for taking chances.

We might as well take these risks, because we are young and inevitably are better off taking them now, since the responsibility we hold is not at our life’s peak.

Being 20 calls for some of the best times of our lives to come.

Not taking advantage of what we are able to do would just be a waste.

Being 20 is just an age.

BUT, a beautiful and EXTREMELY relevant one — if you ask me.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
