Around this time seven years into the future, the summer Olympic games will be occurring. There will be a the summer games in Tokyo, Japan in between all of this in 2020, but it still up in the air as to which city will host the 2024 Olympics.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) is getting faced with a very difficult decision as the final two candidates are Los Angeles, California and Paris, France. They both brought very intriguing proposals to the table recently. So intriguing that an ultimatum was given for this selection.
The IOC believes that both candidates should have the honor of hosting an Olympic Games, so they stated that they may possibly be awarding the honor for both the 2024 Olympics as well as the 2028 Olympics. This is rarity, as the last time an ultimatum was offered like this was in 1921, giving Paris and Amsterdam a chance to host the games in 1924 and 1928 (oh the irony). However, both candidate cities prefer 2024 over 2028. If one candidate city doesn't raise their hand in being okay with hosting in 2028, voting will occur like normal in September, awarding one candidate city the honor of hosting the 2024 Olympic games. The other will be unfortunately out of luck.
Let's talk about the two strong candidates and their background of hosting games. Los Angeles, California would break the 22 year gap for the United States to host an Olympic Games. The last Olympics that was in the US was in 2002 located in Salt Lake City, Utah. However, the last summer Olympics was in Atlanta in 1996. Los Angeles has hosted a summer Olympics before in 1984.
Paris, France hasn't been quite as strong in the Olympic hosting front. The last time they hosted an Olympics was in 1924. Before that, was 1900. So, it was be exactly one century later that Paris would get to host a summer Olympic games.
This ultimatum is a history book in the making for a few reasons. One is that the IOC very rarely offers ultimatums, making the selection for two Olympic games as opposed to the traditional one. If Paris gets selected for 2024, it would be exactly one century between hosting the Olympics for that city. If Los Angeles gets selected for 2024, it would be exactly 40 years between their hostings of the Olympics. If both Los Angeles and Paris are selected through the ultimatum, they will join London in being the only cities to host the Olympics three times.
So, do you think there will be a vote in September? Or will the ultimatum that the IOC proposed get accepted by both parties? I guess we will just have to wait and see.
