7 Ways I Will Be A Better Person In 2018

2017 has been an eventful year in which I slowly began finding myself and finished my first semester of college. It has also been a year where I realized that things can never be taken for granted and that any sort of opportunity laid out is something that shouldn't be ignored.

Compiled below is my list of New Year's resolutions because 1. might as well make another list for 2018 and 2. it's always more efficient to have stuff made prematurely in case one is unorganized in the brand new year.

1. Eat more food

Food is everything... at least for me... and if you don't agree with me, are you even human?

2. Travel or at least plan to travel

Going to new and exotic places have always been at the top of my bucket list: I just never had the time or the energy to plan anything or go anywhere because 1. busy with school, 2. busy with a nonexistent social life, and 3. too lazy to plan. But 2018 is a new year, so why not start to plan?

3. Spend some time with family

I must admit: spending time with family can be a hassle. But maybe by the time 2018 rolls around, they will get better? Maybe suddenly, everyone's attitudes will change and my family can finally transform into the one that I always wanted to have.

4. Make memories with friends

Everyone is either already in college in another state, or about to live in dorms. I live in a dorm while most of my friends are in the city so sometimes its a commute just to be able to see them, so might as well make the most of our friendships in the month of January in the beginning of 2018.

5. Finish my novel

Even I know this, even though I enjoy to write. Sometimes, the right words just don't come out correctly. What you think in your brain doesn't necessarily come out as it is on the paper.

The word "writer's block" is just annoying to think about, and having a commitment such as a novel on your hands is just sometimes too much to handle.

6. Sleep more

College is such a hassle in the first semester, so to make up all those missing hours of sleep, why not catch up on them during the one month break in January? Come on, when else can you be able to sleep for more than 9 hours per night? Like.. that's just heaven right there.

7. Think positive

They always say optimism is the best medicine. So even in worst times, I guess 2018 should be a positive year. 2017 had its ups and downs, but maybe 2018 can change that.

Hopefully this list can be something I can actually accomplish in 2018. Maybe in return, it can be a nice generally helpful list for everyone.

In case you're unaware, "resting bitch face" is the term used to describe when a person's natural, expressionless face makes it look like they are mad at the world. Whether they are walking down the street or simply spacing out thinking about what to eat for dinner, it's very easy for others to assume that this person is either upset or mad at them. Because of this, those of us with Resting Bitch Face (RBF), and especially us women, have all experienced many of the same situations and conversations, including:

We've all had a crush before. Whether it leads to something or nothing, the process has all been the same. The awkward feelings, the stalking, and the stress of trying to keep this huge secret. The feeling of becoming a total spazz is something that cannot be avoided, and the most spazzy family that can relate to this feeling is the Belcher's.

At the tender age of 18, we are bestowed with the title of “adult.” For 17 years, we live under the rules and guidelines of our parents, school, and government, and to stray from any of those rules or guidelines marks us as a rebel. At 18, though, we must choose which college we want to go to or what career we want. We are allowed and encouraged to vote. We can buy lottery tickets and cigarettes. We can drop out of school, leave our household, and do other "adult" things. At 18, we start down a path of thinking for ourselves, when for the entirety of our lives other institutions have been mandated to think and do for us.

What about those of us who don't do it all in four years?

"College will be the best four years of your life" is a phrase that we have all heard growing up. College is painted as a magical place to us while we are in high school. A place you go to learn, meet your best friends and probably have the time of your life while all of this is going down. Four whirlwind years, where everything that you've known changes and you start to learn what it means to live on your own, have a job, etc. But what about those of us who don't do this all in four years? Major changes, hard courses, switching schools, career paths changing, these are just a handful of factors that could extend your four years to five, six or seven. There is nothing wrong with taking extra time to graduate, but returning as a fifth-year is a little different. Most of your best friends have most likely graduated and moved and while you may be one of the oldest undergraduates on campus, you might feel as awkward as a freshmen. A world that became home and comfortable to you is still there but it's slightly different than you've known it to be and you have to find a groove to fall into. These are thoughts you'll have as you look ahead to returning to your college campus, with a victory lap planned.
