When we hear the words "red carpet", we tend to automatically think of fancy attire and celebrities. We think of what our favorite celebrity is going to wear for insert-award-show-name-here and if they will make the "Best Dressed" page in the upcoming issues of supermarket fashion magazines. It is arguably the most important part of any award show alongside the discovery of who actually wins an award.
With this being said, the red carpet is the perfect event where a designer can gain the exposure they want and need for their work. Their names are usually revealed when the interviewer asks, "Who are you wearing tonight, famous person?"
On this particular night in Hollywood, however, the question became "Why are you wearing black tonight?"
As part of the wave of fighting against gender inequality and sexual harassment in the entertainment industry, a campaign titled "TIME'S UP" launched just days before the 75th Annual Golden Globes. The campaign helps support victims of inequality, harassment and assault in any field of work and even offers legal help with their own Legal Defense Fund.
In response to this movement, celebrities in every area of the entertainment industry showed their support for the campaign by posting on social media. It didn't just stop there, either; they decided to make the movement even bigger by wearing black on the red carpet on the night of this award show. These celebrities and supporters also motivated people all over the world to show their support by wearing black throughout the day and to post it on social media with the hashtag "#TIMESUPNOW".
These celebrities not only wore black to show their support but to also use their platform to raise awareness. Instead of focusing on designers of dresses and tuxes that most viewers can't afford anyway, the red carpet sparked conversations about real life issues that anyone can relate to.
The fact that journalists asked why they were wearing black shows that big events like the red carpet can be the hub for important conversations. Some celebrities invited to the award show also chose to invite female activists as their plus one instead of a formal date.
This movement has not only been important in raising awareness for these serious issues and fighting for change but to also show that something as iconic as the red carpet can change its format completely for the better. It is a new world in this year of 2018, and maybe it is time for some change in areas we never knew needed it.
