From Katy Perry's off-putting debut as host, to Taylor Swift's shady premier of her "Look What You Made Me Do" music video, the MTV Video Music Video Awards were definitely cringe-worthy and had me thinking "why am I even still watching this?". After attending the iconic 2016 VMA's and seeing Beyoncè, I definitely knew I would be somewhat disappointed and bored with this year's show. But, there were moments where I couldn't take my eyes off of the TV. Here are a few of what I believe are the best, the worst, and the in between moments of the 2017 VMA's.
The Best:
P!nk
Not only was she awarded with the Michael Jackson Vanguard Award, but she also put on a show-stopping performance of all of her greatest hits. Songs like "So What" and "Raise Your Glass" brought me back to my childhood. I think everyone can agree that her speech towards her daughter, Willow, about accepting all beauty was totally relevant to today.
Fifth Harmony
Miley Cyrus
Let's all take a moment and remember Miley's performance during the 2013 VMA's. Personally, I am so much more into this Miley Cyrus phase and her performance of "Younger Now" was a vocal-centric performance I really enjoyed. This performance only got me more excited for her upcoming album.
The Worst:
Katy Perry
Honestly, Katy Perry reminded me of that random family member who comes during the holidays and tries to be relatable and funny. I didn't expect anything more, considering I am not the biggest Katy fan, but I did expect more of the VMA's as an award show and Katy Perry lost that for me. Better luck next time, Katy!
The Bored Audience
This year's VMA's seemed very empty and the ones that showed up looked like they genuinely did not want to be there. I was extremely disappointed because all I could picture were the audiences faces last year during performances such as Beyonce and Ariana Grande. The celebrities attending and random audience members seemed completely unmoved by anything happening on stage.
The In-Between:
Taylor Swift
Personally, I am a HUGE Taylor Swift fan and this music video at first viewing was all over the place for me. Did anyone get a little bit of nostalgia when seeing Taylor with a 13 on her hand again?! When the "Look What You Made Me Do" music video came on the screen everyone in the room I was watching with was in shock. Taylor is definitely playing the victim in a more dramatic way then ever before which was why this was in between to me. But, now that I understand the underlining messages in this music video and have watched several times, I'm starting to appreciate Taylor's inner snake. I am counting down the days until her Reputation album comes out- I can't wait to hear her new sound!
The 2017 MTV Video Music Awards were a bit of a bummer. It seems to me that this happens every other year but the award show definitely got me excited for soon-to-be-released albums. Hopefully next year they figure out how to get back that excitement from years past.
