This past Sunday was the 89th Oscars Academy Awards show. I have been looking forward to this for many weeks, especially since I'm an award show fanatic. I love the glamour, fashion, awards, music, etc. I am also of a fan of a lot of movies that came out this past year. So obviously, I was anxiously waiting to see who was going to take home the biggest awards of the night.
The show started out with the red carpet, one of my favorite parts of the show. I love fashion and predicting what all of the stars are going to wear. Some I loved, some not so much. Scarlett Johansson and Janelle Monet were my favorites for best dressed. On the other hand, I was not fond of Dakota Johnson's gold gown or Naomie Harris' cape-like dress.
Shortly after, the real show began. Jimmy Kimmel, who was the host, made his opening monologue. Full with a few jokes, he was pretty spot-on. Some of his best moments throughout the night was when he had the crowd give the "overrated" Meryl Streep a standing ovation, and his ongoing jokes with Matt Damon.
They wasted no time, and started announcing the MANY awards of the night. In the words of Dax Shephard, the Osacrs are "24 hours long," which gives a pretty good picture about how long the show actually is. While I haven't seen every movie that was nominated, I had seen a bunch of them, and I knew a lot about most the films. This means I had a pretty clear idea of who I did and did not want to win.
One of the first main awards announced was Actor In a Supporting Role. One thing you should know about me before I continue is I am a huge Dev Patel and Ryan Gosling fan, and Dev was nominated in this category for his part in "Lion", which was one of my favorite movies of the year. However, he didn't win. I was obviously upset, but Mahershala Ali won for his role in "Moonlight", which was well deserved. Dev, you'll get them next time!
Viola Davis won Actress In a Supporting Film. I can pretty surely say that most people knew this was going to be the outcome, and no one was surprised or upset with it. She said a moving and emotional speech. After, there were many awards given for effects such as Costume Design and Sound Editing.
The most important awards were, of course, right at the end. While I was hoping for Ryan Gosling to win Best Actor, I knew there was a strong possibility that Denzel Washington would win. However, neither of those things happened. The award was given to Casey Affleck, some who was charged for rape TWICE. The fact that people like this are still awarded and shown support boggles my mind. After he made his speech, to a crowd of people who did not look impressed, the Best Actress award won given to Emma Stone. This was 100% the most well-deserved award of the night. She, like always, made an amazing and empowering speech before all the madness happened.
The most prestigious award of the night is Best Picture. I was overcome with excitement when the presenter said "La La Land" had won, since I adore that film. But there was a mistake. Halfway into the director's acceptance speech, it was said that there was a mix-up, and Moonlight had actually won. I was speechless as this was gong on. But all of the actors and creators of "La La Land" reacted with class, and congratulated the winners.
Despite all of this, and a lot of the boring monologue in between, I enjoyed the award show. And the star of the night to me was little Sunny Pawar.
