Let's face it, 2017 was one nutty year. So many events that will go down in history, some good and some bad. But here are my top 5 that will probably change the way I live 2018.
1. President Donald Trump
Whether you are a Republican or a Democrat and/or you support Donald Trump, as a human being, one thing we can be sure of is that he has made mistakes. Several mistakes. Donald Trump has helped me realize how much words can hurt people and the extent words can affect someone. So many people around me have been affected by this man (most of the time in a negative context) and as a leader, he has hurt so many citizens. Donald Trump has helped me realize that I need to think before I speak in 2018.
2. Las Vegas shooting (and every mass shooting that occurred in 2017)
This shooting is the one shooting that led me to tears this year. When I heard of this shooting my instive thought was " Oh, another one?" in the most monotone tone you could imagine. That's what hurt me.
I was disappointed in myself for becoming so immune and used to shootings. How could I be so insensitive? Then I became fearful at the thought of how this could have happened to anyone anywhere.
Then I became angry at how just like me, many other people are just used to the fact that lives were taken by a single gun, how easy it is to purchase one, and how President Donald Trump casually announced the shooting.
The shooting has helped me realize how precious my life is and that any given moment my life could be stripped away from me. The Las Vegas Shooting has helped me realize I need to appreciate all things that happen to me whether it is good or bad in the year 2018.
3. South Korea winning their government
South Korean citizens showed the world this year what a true democracy is. A brief overview would be that through civil and non-violent protests, South Korea overthrew their corrupt president, Park Geun Hye.
This event made me realize that anything can happen with time and passion. It took a whole country to act and protest to show results, but it worked and they succeeded. The South Korean citizens showed me to try no matter how impossible events may seem because without trying there will be no result.
4. Chris Pratt and Anna Faris' separation
Love is not real. Or love is real but it will not always last. Yes, you can fight me on this one. Yes, I know several long-lasting, loving relationships, but in reality, there are more couples that break up than stay together IN LOVE. I loved this couple and they are one of the rare couples that helped me believe that love is real and can happen.
But then they broke up. It may sound "glass half-empty," but not everything will work out. Life gets in the way and people grow apart. That's just life. Chris Pratt and Anna Faris helped me realize that love is real, almost too real and you can still love each other but not be together.
5. Death
Many celebrities committed suicide in 2017. The one that shook me up the most is the lead singer of Korean Pop group, SHINee. Not only was he a celebrity I was familiar with, but someone I grew up listening to. The fact that he was in pain, so much to take his own life is heart breaking. He was indirectly asking for help on multiple occasions and got none. He was depressed but on the outside smiling so no one believed he was in desperate need of help.
Death and suicide taught me that I need to keep my eyes and heart always open to people that need the help. I need to check up on friends and family if they hint even the smallest bit of pain. It is always better to be safe rather than sorry.
