2016 Rio Olympics Might Be Dangerous

Welcome to the "Marvelous City?"

2016 Rio Olympics Might Be Dangerous
Tony Swartz "The Red Shtick"

The Olympic games, the largest time of celebration and competition in the world, is soon to come; however, with outbreaks of the Zika virus, political destruction, and a spiraling economy, Rio de Janeiro may not be the Brazilian paradise we imagined it to be in 2016.

To be selected as the host city for the Olympic Summer Games is a honor for any city, with potential to bring an enormous amount of tourism, providing an economic boost for the country. Although the praise and glory a city receives from hosting these games many ask why Rio seems so unprepared? Raw sewage, the Zika virus, theft and violence, economic depression all have stricken Rio at the same time. It appears that Rio de Janeiro may be in over its head. Ed Hula from the Olympics online publication Around the Rings, spoke with CNN's Around the World, "I think it's all a perfect storm....Anything bad that could happen to Rio de Janeiro seems to be happening a this point."

If illnesses were in style, we might could describe the Zika virus as the new Ebola. Our current world fights every disease just to turn around to a new mutated outbreak that threatens travel and health. So because of this there has been a strong urgency to possibly change the date or location of the games. The World Health Organization (WHO) dismisses the idea of changing the dates or location but only urges women who are pregnant to not attend. An individual who is infected many times is unaware and if they experience any symptoms they are mild, such as a headache, fever, or rash. Unfortunately, the biggest threat is the birth of children with deformities such as microcephaly (a smaller head than normal) which could be life threatening.

And in short, Brazil's economy and government is struggling, but who isn't now? They are experiencing a deep recession and President Dilma Rousseff has been suspended for 180 days after a trial to be impeached. This among crumbling infrastructure in Rio and high crime rates adds up to be the "perfect storm."

Now its time for the big WHAT IF. What if this is a media scam? Yes, raw sewage floats in the bay, eww, and yes, Zika virus is real and dangerous, but so is the air quality of Beijing and World War I & II (both which cancelled the Games). And as of now, Beijing holds the record for the most polluted venue so there is hope for Rio, but imagine amidst all this negativity theres a hidden message. It is almost two months away and it is time to get everyone in the world talking about *announcer's voice here* THE 2016 SUMMER OLYMPIC GAMES AT RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL. Is it a media scam? Reverse psychology? Spoon feeding the world what is wrong with the Games to get us talking about it? Again there are some serious problems that need to be discussed and solved but what do you think? Is a majority of the talk just talk? Probably, maybe not, maybe so. Whatever happens we will all probably end up reacting the same way most do, watching about ten minutes of something we think will be interesting and realizing its not so much but yes "I watched the Olympics."

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
