Last year, I compiled a list of 20 things I would love to do by the time I was 20. I did like three things. They were uneventful. So because I'm nostalgic and sentimental, I honored my entire year as 19 and waved goodbye over the past week. In celebration of the death of my teen years, here is my list of everything I've learned in my two decades.
1. People will do what people do and will say what they say. That is none of your business. Be better.
2. Participate in where your life is going, and what you are doing. You're not a bystander.
3. Ask for help. (For real)
4. Say thank you!
5. Handwritten notes are better and sweeter and set you apart.
6. Keep three fun facts in your pocket about yourself. People will constantly ask. It will come in handy.
7. Get coffee with yourself alone.
8. Have good manners.
9. Ask people how they are and actually mean it.
10. Lipstick is always a great idea.
11. If you have studied and worked as hard as you possibly can and you are tired but not finished then go to sleep. You've done your best.
12. Pray for your friends and your family and your leaders.
13. Learn how to braid. It doesn't matter if you have hair. It's like a boy scout skill.
14. Tell the truth. With others. With yourself. It will keep you out of trouble.
15. Take a lot of risks. You'll learn from the bad and thrive from the best.
16. Stay 40% hopeful and 60% realistic.
17. Cry when you need to do so.
18. Take lots of pictures of moments and experiences. But you don't have to post everything.
19. Give as much as you can, but don't expect to get anything in return.
20. Speak up. Stand for something. And be unapologetic for this.
Here's to cheers to a fabulous decade of my 20s!
