20 Things I've Learned in 20 Years

This past Saturday, I turned 20 years old and believe it or not, you can learn a lot about life and yourself in that time. After I turned 20, I actually did feel a little bit different. Usually when someone would ask me "how does it feel to be *enter age here*" I'd say, that there was no real difference. But, in the 20 years I've been around, I'm realizing that a lot has actually changed. I figured it be a good idea to walk through all of the major lessons I've learned in the 20 years that I've been alive; but, of course, I know I'm only 20 and don't know everything.

1. Not everyone is going to like you.

Whether it be romantically or friendship wise, it's almost inevitable that someone won't like you. This isn't necessarily against you as a person, but more so because of the other person. The best thing you can do is just be you - actually, the best you - because you are the one person who you have to be with for the rest of your life.

2. Don't let your friends write on you with a Sharpie

It takes forever to remove and you never know who might see their artwork. So, be careful.

3. Your family will always be there.

When you feel broken or beaten down, the best people to turn to are your family. For me, family has been my saving grace and without them I wouldn't have made it this long, and the one thing that keeps me going everyday is knowing that I have someone on my side.

4. Don't be ashamed of your laughter.

5. DON'T EVER USE A ROUND BRUSH!

After getting tangled up with a round brush for about an hour and having my dad pull out each bustle one-by-one with a pair of pliers I will never do it again. I will never attempt to achieve the "dry bar" look at home, because it simply was too terrifying (but, also pretty funny - at least for my family members who witnessed the fiasco).

6. What other people think go you, is none of your business and their opinions should NOT impact your life.

Everyone has an opinion, but no way should you be living your life trying to satisfy some stranger's opinion of you. Live your life and if they don't like what you're doing, they can just move on. In the grand scheme of things, they don't matter. The only opinion that matters is your own. If you're achieving your dream and not hurting anybody, don't be afraid to do something because of someone else.

7. Give yourself a break sometimes.

Honestly, no one functions well when there pushed to there limit every day, so take a chill pill once in a while.

8. Even the adults don't have everything figured out.

9. Always wear a coat outside when it's below 30 degrees.

Your outfit or aesthetic is not worth suffering through the cold. Please wear a coat.

10. Take care of yourself mentally and physically.

I think everyone struggles with this one. I know it's hard to spend time on yourself sometimes, but I swear that you feel happier when you are actually cared for.

11. If you fall down (literally), laugh and let your friends laugh too.

It's best to not take yourself too seriously, especially if you fall down around your friends. It's funny, laugh, move on (unless you're actually hurt).

12. Life has a weird way of working itself out.

Before you know it you'll be 90 years old and every problem you put so much weight on, won't matter.

13. Don't chase anybody.

IMPORTANT: IF THEY WANT TO BE IN YOUR LIFE, THEY WILL BE WITHOUT YOU CHASING OR BEGGING FOR THEM.

14. Don't wear socks and sneakers to a water park.

It's a weird feeling when you you take off your socks and your feet are two shades lighter than their normal shade.

15. Wear sunscreen when you plan on being outside for a long amount of time.

16. You can't control everything.

17. You can't tell someone how to feel.

You don't live in their brain and you don't know what they've been through. What matters and makes sense to you, doesn't necessarily makes sense to them. Let them feel how they feel and do your best to empathize.

18. Appreciate the time you have with others because you never know what could happen.

Don't live life and then forget to appreciate the people you love. Tomorrow it could all disappear and you'll hate yourself.

19. The difference between "You're" and "Your"

20. Smile more!

It never hurts to smile! :)

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
