20 Struggles of Being Extremely Forgetful

At the ripe old age of 18, my memory is about as good as my 78 year old grandma. While I can still remember books, songs, movies, and random trivia (you know, the important stuff), I for some reason cannot remember any of the small things, from my ID, keys, and gym shoes, to the end of the sentence I just started. Unfortunately, I have become accustomed to my terrible memory and am not even surprised when I experience any of the following (though I am still deeply disappointed in myself).

1. Checking for everything at least five times before you leave.

2. And still having to go back to your room to get it.

3. Leaving your things in public places.

4. And having mini-heart attacks when you realize you don’t have them.

5. Having to go back in to get them.

6. And admitting to everyone that just saw you leave that you forgot something.

7. Relying on others to bring you things when you forget them.

8. Making lists for the grocery store when you only need two things.

9. And schedules for things that are happening later that day.

10. Forgetting your keys in the ignition when you get out of the car.

11. And having a not-so-mini-heart attack when you can’t find them.

12. And laughing it off in front of your friends, even though you’re deeply ashamed

13. Constantly trailing off mid-sentence.

14. And walking into rooms only to forget why you went in there.

15. Forgetting what show you’re watching during the commercials.

16. Forgetting which movie you’re at during the previews.

17. Forgetting where you’re going and driving the wrong direction out of your driveway.

18. Giving up on old accounts because you know you won’t remember the passwords.

19. Forgetting things only when people ask you questions about them.

20. Being afraid that at some point, someone’s going to ask you your name and for a second, you really won’t know.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
