New Year's resolutions are something we all struggle to cope with. We set them, and then half way into January, we break them and completely forget about them. If you're even part human, you've probably decided on January 1st of any given year that you're going to lose 15 pounds, join a gym, save your money, spend more time with your family, or become more organized. While these resolutions are good, they are the same ones that you keep making and breaking. Here are 20 new year's resolutions that might actually make you a better person and improve your quality of life.
1. Be a better listener
Not only is it a good life practice in general, it will better your personal relationships. I promise.
2. Take your own advice
Every time your friend has a crisis, you give them amazing advice that will solve all their problems. But when it comes to you own problems, you can't seem to follow your own advice. Doing this might make everything easier.
3. Do more random acts of kindness
Random acts of kindness not only make you feel good, but will make someone else feel even better.
4. Prioritize your life
As young adults, we have a lot going on. We have to juggle school, work, extracurriculars, family and a social life all while making no money and getting less than 5 hours of sleep every night. Figure out what is most important to you and spend the most time on that.
5. Don't get stressed out so easily
Don't get overly frustrated because you woke up late, your car won't start, or you spilled coffee on yourself. Things happen, life goes on, and you don't need to get so upset over little things.
6. Control your temper.
Like #5, it's easy to get angry over small things, but you will later realize how stupid it was.
7. Eat more greens.
Instead of setting a goal for yourself like "stop eating fried foods" or "lose 10 pounds", set something that is easy and straightforward. It doesn't require you to cut anything out of your life that you enjoy, instead you're just adding stuff in.
8. Do more charity/volunteer work.
It's something that we need to do, yet we often forget.
9. Wake up earlier
You'll be tired for the first few days, but you will get used to it and will really enjoy your days more. You will have so much more time to get everything done.
10. Go to bed earlier
This one goes hand-in-hand with #9.
11. Smile more
There have been some studies that prove that smiling more will actually make you a happier person.
12. Work on fixing any relationships you may have been neglecting
Our busy lives make it hard to keep up with all of our personal relationships may it be a significant other, parent, sibling, friend, or even your dog.
13. Spend more time on a hobby
We barely have time to engage in our hobbies anymore, so set some specific time apart from your life to do something you actually enjoy for no reason at all.
14. Stop comparing yourself to others
This is so detrimental to your self-esteem, and it's anything but productive.
15. Procrastinate less
No matter how good you are at it, it can go wrong, and eliminating it will make you less stressed out about all the things you have to get done.
16. Do something creative
Let the left side of your brain take over.
17. Do something adventurous
It can be fun and also therapeutic. Take the time to enjoy yourself.
18. Go outside of your comfort zone
Push all of your limits and do something you've never done before. You will be surprised at what you can accomplish.
19. Make new friends
Don't get rid of your old ones, but make more. Meet new people and have more opportunities to have fun and form relationships.
20. Don't dwell on the past or focus too much on the future
The present is the only thing you should be worrying about right now. The rest will come to terms.
