'20 Minutes Of Action'

Is this the last straw?

By now, I think we have all heard about the atrocities over at Stanford University, but let me go ahead and sum it up for you guys that don’t know. On January 17, 2015, Stanford swimmer Brock Turner took a unconscious woman behind a dumpster and proceeded to rape her throughout the night until two male students stumbled by the scene and saved the day. But sadly, the end result of this mess was six months in jail and a woman that will never be able to live a normal life ever again.

So now we ask ourselves, how does a monster like Brock get only six months of prison after the things he did? Great question. Brock’s father believed that jail would “have a severe impact on him” and that the long-term sentence was too much for just “20 minutes of action.” Yeah, it may make a severe impact on him, but that maybe is what he needs to realize what exactly he did. He needs to sit in that jail cell for a long time and let it maybe leave a impact on him that would be somewhat close to what he did to the woman he raped.

That woman has lost her dignity and will never be able to get it back again because some big-time Stanford swimmer took her out one night behind a dumpster and raped her without her being able to just say “no.” You know what the worst thing is, too? The guy who did it will only have to experience hell for six months while the victim will have to experience it for the rest of her life.

There is a good reason that this is the top headline in the news right now. We, as a country, just cannot figure out how to punish people the right way. This is the last straw. To let a criminal, monster, rapist or whatever this person is only get six months is flat-out unacceptable and incredibly sad for the woman who was stripped of her life, dignity and happiness for the rest of her life. This needs to stop.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
