20 Things I Learned By 20

Turns out, mom was right about pretty much everything.

20 Things I Learned By 20
Lori Cook

It's exactly one week until my 20th birthday, and for a while the idea of not being a teenager anymore really freaked me out. But as I thought more about what it meant to "not be a kid anymore," I realized how much I've learned in the short time I've been on this earth. And I'd like to share it with you.

1. It's okay to not know what you want to do with your life.

2. Your siblings are the best friends you'll ever have, even when you can't stand them.

3. High school teachers, the good and the bad, are trying to help you succeed, not make your life harder.

4. Snapchatting and driving doesn't make you look cool, it actually makes you look stupid. Endangering lives doesn't make you look "cute" and no one needs to see a 10-second video to you lip sinking to "Closer."

5. Staying close with your high school friends is hard, but worth it.

6. Just because your friends with someone, doesn't mean living together is a good idea.

7. The boy you "loved" when you were 16 probably isn't going to be the one you love forever.

8. People's negativity towards you usually comes from a place of envy. (But you should still, like my mom says, "kill them with kindness.")

9. Visit your grandparents, even if it seems boring. They won't be around forever.

10. Request off work to go to your family Christmas party, 4th of July barbecue, etc. Money is great, but it isn't everything.

11. Your parents can tell a fake friend before you can.

12. How many likes you get on Instagram is irreverent (I'm embarrassed that this needs to be stated). Focus more on enjoying life and less on making it look like you have one.

13. College is hard, and if you're not graduating on time or making the Deans List every semester like the rest of your friends, that's okay. A degree is a degree and the fact that you're still in school is an accomplishment.

14. It's okay if you skip the "party stage," but that doesn't mean you should isolate yourself.

15. If your parents don't think something is a good idea, they're probably right.

16. It's okay to admit when you need help. It doesn't make you weak, if anything, it makes you stronger.

17. Changing your major isn't a bad thing. You're paying for an education, and it should revolve around what you want to learn, even if you change your mind.

18. Don't judge the virgins and don't judge the hoes. We're all in different places and that's okay.

19. Fall in love with your best friend, and when you do, make sure you say, "I love you" enough.

20. The world doesn't owe you anything.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
