Is it just me, or is 20 a weird age? You've been alive for two decades now, and you're not a teenager anymore. You've been an "adult" for a couple years now, but you still have restrictions on what you can and can't do. While you still can't legally get into a bar or rent a car in your own name, 20 is a year where you'll learn a lot about yourself. Over the course of my 20 years, I've picked up a handful of lessons along the way.
1. Start treating your body the way it should be treated.
Don't get me wrong, going out is a blast and college is the only time where it's socially acceptable to stay out all night, but poisoning your body with alcohol isn't exactly the best thing for it. Plus, as your metabolism slows down, you realize it will be easier to drop those excess five pounds now than in 10 years from now.
2. You'll get nowhere without setting goals.
If you have nothing to words towards, where are you going?
3. You will make mistakes; don't let them define you.
It's okay to make mistakes, just be conscious of how you can move forward.
4. Cherish your true friends.
Your ride-or-die friends who you want to grow old with? Yeah, cherish them and never let them go.
5. Stop putting other people's opinions ahead of your own.
There comes a time when you must focus on what makes you happy, not doing everything someone else approves of.
6. Recognize the difference between love and lust.
Love is doing life together, not agreeing on everything, and learning from each other. Lust is not.
7. There will be a point in time where you're financially unstable.
Part of growing up includes paying bills- car payments, health insurance, rent; they all add up. You're going to work your hardest, and still feel like you have no money.
8. Taking time for yourself is equally as important as being with others.
Take a personal day and explore a place you've never been. It's crucial for your mental health that you enjoy the person you've become.
9. Everyone comes into your life for a reason.
They'll teach you something about yourself that you didn't know before. Be grateful for this.
10. Stop judging.
Not everyone is going to be exactly like you, and that's a good thing. The moment you realize everyone has their own story is the moment you stop judging.
11. Accept constructive criticism.
From coaches, professors, bosses; the list goes on. They're shaping you into a better person.
12. Confidence is the best accessory.
Believing in yourself and sporting a smile is the best thing you can do for yourself.
13. It's good to reminisce about the past.
One day you'll be looking at old pictures from high school, and you'll start to tear up. Whether they're happy or sad tears, it's healthy to reflect on the past and how you've grown.
14. Don't settle for a job you hate.
If you hate your job, quit. You're too young to be stuck in a profession you don't love when you have your whole life ahead of you.
15. Social media doesn't define you.
Your life is certainly not dependent on social media, so please don't let it become that way. It does not matter how many followers or likes you get on a post.
16. Don't take people or experiences for granted.
If you're lucky enough to have people in your life who love you unconditionally, don't take them for granted. You never know when someone's last day might be.
17. If something seems off, it probably is.
Whether it's with a friend or in a relationship, trust your gut. It usually speaks the truth.
18. You will grow apart from certain people.
People will come and go, the good ones will stay.
19. You still need your parents.
And not just to make your dentist appointments or lend you $20 here and there, but for moral support and guidance as you embark on your own journey.
20. You have a whole lot of life ahead of you.
So quit waiting around and go live it.
