For the first time in recorded history, the United States will be hit by two hurricanes stronger than Category 4 in the same season. Hurricane Harvey left dozens of dead and thousands misplaced. By the time this article is published, Irma will have most likely hit Florida and the rest of the Southeastern coast of the U.S.

Now, I haven't been directly affected by either storm, but I know what it's like to have your life turned upside-down. That means I know one of the biggest struggles faced during a time like this is keeping the faith.

I might not be in Texas or Florida to help pick up the mess the hurricanes leave behind, but I believe in the power of prayer and faith. I hope even one person finds these verses comforting during this tremendously difficult time.

1. Deuteronomy 31:6

"Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the LORD your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.”

2. Psalm 34:17-18

"The righteous cry out, and the LORD hears them; he delivers them from all their troubles. The LORD is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit."

3. 2 Corinthians 4:16-18

"Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal."

4. Isaiah 41:10

"So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand."

5. Proverbs 3:5-6

"Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight."

6. 1 Peter 5:6-7

"Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time.Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you."

7. John 14:27

"Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid."

8. Philippians 4:6-7

"Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus."

9. Psalm 40:1-2

"I waited patiently for the Lord; he turned to me and heard my cry.He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire; he set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand."

10. Isaiah 40:31

"but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint."

11. Psalm 32:7

"You are my hiding place; you will protect me from trouble and surround me with songs of deliverance."

12. Romans 8:31-32

"If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things?"

13. Psalm 4:8

"In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, Lord, make me dwell in safety."

14. Psalm 37:8,11

"Refrain from anger and turn from wrath; do not fret—it leads only to evil. But the meek will inherit the land and enjoy peace and prosperity."

15. Romans 8:24-25

"For in this hope we were saved. But hope that is seen is no hope at all. Who hopes for what they already have? But if we hope for what we do not yet have, we wait for it patiently."

16. Romans 8:28

"And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose."

17. Jeremiah 32:27

“I am the Lord, the God of all mankind. Is anything too hard for me?"

18. Matthew 18:19-20

“Again, truly I tell you that if two of you on earth agree about anything they ask for, it will be done for them by my Father in heaven. For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.”

19. Psalm 120: 1

"I call on the Lord in my distress, and he answers me."

20. Psalm 55:22

"Cast your cares on the Lord and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous be shaken."

Prayer and meditation have helped me through the most difficult points in my life. Everyone experiences sadness and pain differently, but of all the different pains I have had, reading scripture always assured me of two things: I am not alone, and pain is temporary.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
