19 is such an awkward age. It’s not 18, and it’s certainly not 21, but that doesn’t make it any less significant. My 19th birthday has approached, and I have taken the time to reflect on many things I have learned from my youth through my teenage years. As I analyze the important warnings and take in the knowledge needed in this crucial year of life, I am reminded of how much I have grown in the past year. Here are 19 things I have learned in my 19 years:
1. Do what makes you happy.
It doesn’t matter what your peers, and especially strangers, think of you. Whether it’s your choice of major, fashion sense, or quirky passions, continue to do what you love unapologetically.
2. Don't be afraid to be outspoken.
The worst feeling in the world is wondering “what if?”. If something is on your mind, tell the world. You never know if a simple word can change an attitude, perspective, or positively impact those around you.
3. Laugh, and laugh often.
Let your silly side shine; you don’t always have to be serious. Take a deep breath and truly let yourself be aware of your surroundings. Life can be funny, so smile and enjoy.
4. The truth will set you free.
I have learned that truth usually comes out anyway, so it might as well be you to be the one to share the entire story. Guilt is one of the crappiest feelings in the world, and getting caught in a lie is even crappier.
5. Be grateful for the little things.
There’s always someone in a worse situation. Count your blessings, because even your worst day could be someone’s best.
6. Rolling down the car windows is worth your hair looking messy.
There is nothing better than your hand on the wheel of the car and the music blasting through the speakers. The sense of freedom that comes with the wind ripping through the windows is worth a few loose strands of hair from your ponytail.
7. It's OK to cry...
Releasing emotions is definitely healthy and nothing to be ashamed of.
8. ...But it's never worth crying over a boy.
You’re independent and strong, and you can be happy by having peace with yourself. Spend time discovering who you are, not who you’re supposed to be with.
9. There's no such thing as too much prayer.
Pray when you’re happy, or pray when you’re sad. Jesus is your best friend, and He will listen to anything you have to say. Tell Him about how amazing your day was, and confide in Him when you need help.
10. Don't be afraid to ask for help.
Never let your pride get in the way. There is always someone out there as intelligent as you, and the only way to learn is to listen.
11. It is so important to know your limit.
This is implies everything: work, commitments, alcohol, or fun. Don’t overwhelm yourself in any type of situation that can get out of control.
12. Don't go to bed upset or angry. You might think that taking a nap will solve all of your problems, but you’ll simply wake up more frustrated than before. Work through your situation before you consider catching some zzz’s.
13. Failure is part of life.
It is impossible to be perfect. No one is going to get A’s on every test, get the perfect boyfriend, never get pimples, and always have perfect hair days. Accept that everyone makes mistakes and move on. You’ll be happier that way!
14. Listen more, and speak less.
Don't think about what you're going to say while another person is talking. Truly absorb what you're hearing, and always make eye contact to stay engaged.
15. Keep the bigger picture in mind.
Whenever you feel like giving up, whether it's studying for a test or working your part-time job, keep in mind that each exam or paycheck is helping you move towards your future. Don't stress, and remember that everything will work out in the end.
16. Be spontaneous.
Don't hold back simply because you've never done it before! Take a road trip to a new city or try a new sport. Whatever you do, you might end up loving it.
17. Never, ever, ever settle.
If your dream doesn't scare you, it isn't big enough. Never assume that "this is the best it'll ever be." You have an entire life ahead of you; go get what you deserve.
18. Be a little dangerous.
You're only young once. Have exciting stories that you'll be able to tell your grandchildren some day. Be imaginative and let go.
19. Be soft.
Don't let the world make you hard or rigid. Don't let bad experiences change your outlook on life. Look at life with excitement and courage, and don't expect anything. Just breathe in, close your eyes, and enjoy.
